Do all Rudbeckia Hirta die right after flowering?

I'm considering planting some rudbeckia hirta next year. The cultivars I have in mind are Cherokee Sunset, Maya, and Tiger Eye. But I read somewhere that the whole rudbeckia hirta plant dies right after flowering (like in late July). Is this true? How do you maintain a season of color (ideally till first frost) if that's the case?

Also, do rudbeckia do well direct seeded into the garden? Or do they have to be started indoors in advance?
