What can I use to hold soil on a raised shelf planter

It occurred to me that it would be good to raise Mesclun and herbs at any easy level for cut and come again gardening. After looking a bit at expensive cedar planters I went to the basement to put in a load of laundry. There I spotted my sturdy resin shelving from Home Depot. I could put it together to be a couple of shelves high and use it upside down so that there is a rim and stuff won't slide off. The shelving is ventilated so drainage would be fine. But I don't know that it makes sense to garden in round pots. It seems that either I should plant something the size of the whole shelf (36x18) or at least a few large rectangles of soil. The shelves hold 150 pounds. I have no idea how much the wet soil would weight but I imagine I don't want heavy pots. It's fine if the planting is not very decorative. Any suggestions for not too expensive ways to hold the planting soil for this raised salad garden?
