Strains of marigolds (Tagetes) have slightly different leaves?

[I am not asking about Calendula here.]

I've two plants with distinctive flowers which most of us would call ''marigolds''. A shorter one with a medium sized double flower has broader leaflets than a taller one with a smaller simpler flowers.

Is this variation between strains typical?

Hi there,
of Tagetes there are mainly 3 species available (T&M offer a species-hybrid, but that is quite new and unusual).
I am not too good with common names, but you could google them.

T. erecta have quite huge flower heads, mostly completely filled/ double, and are somewhat taller. The more natural types grow easily 2-3 feet tall.

You have probably some cultivar of Tagetes patula. The modern cultivars tend to be compact about 8 to 10 inches, with single, semi-double or double flowers. Heritage types grow 3 feet and taller.

not so common and somewhat more subtle is Tagetes tenuifolia. Its flowers are much smaller and single, the foliage much thinner/more narrow.

so if your Marygolds look quite different, perhaps you got a T tenuifoia and T patula, if not probably just 2 different T patula-cultivars.

Yes it is. Look through any seed catalogue--most are on line-- and you will see all the different varieties of Marigolds.

Tangetes tend to be single flowered and come in any height from the taller ones like you have to the mini flowered 8 inch tall plants.

Then there is carnation flowered French marigolds which are double flowered and

the large flowered African marigold.

There are crested marigolds which are a cross between the carnation flowered and the tangetes

My favorite marigolds are the carnation flowered Janie--10 inches tall and Antigua, a 12-14 inch tall African marigold with large 2 1/2 inch flowers

The consensus of the research seems to be that to have any effect the right variety needs to be grown as a cover crop, not interplanted. "Nematode-suppressive Plants "Certain marigolds (Tagetes) suppress root knot and lesion nematodes. French marigolds (varieties include 'Nemagold,' 'Petite Blanc,' 'Queen Sophia,' and 'Tangerine') are most effective. Signet marigolds (Tagetes signata or tennifolia) should be avoided because nematodes will feed and reproduce on these. Marigolds do not work well against the northern root knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla), a species common in areas with cool winters. The effect of marigolds is greatest when they are grown as a solid planting for an entire season. When grown along with annual vegetables or under trees or vines (intercropping), nematode control is usually not very good. To prevent marigold seed from getting in the soil, cut or mow the plants before the flowers open. Lun, The reason a chimera cannot be propagated is due to our old friend genetics. It's complicated but in a nutshell, chimeras have two sets of cells instead of one set. The second set can be as a result of accidental mutation or deliberate action like chemicals. If the mutation occurs near a meristimatic site: roots or stems, the mutation will continue and the plant will continue to have two sets of cells. You must essentially take an entire plant, like the crown or a sucker to get both sets of cells to have the chimera bloom true. If you try to grow a chimera from a leaf you won't exactly get its parent. You will get the genetics of its parents but not the exact copy of the parent because sexual reproduction involves the mixing of genes. This could result in a totally different plant, (due to recessive genes expressing themselves) or a similar plant. I was told by a grower who raises chimeras by leaf that she usually always gets the background color and not the pinwheel color. But she never did explain to me why she was growing chimeras from a leaf. Something about never having any competition in a show category or some such thing. Chimeras pop up all throughout the plant and animal kingdom. Have you ever seen anyone with two distinctly different colored eyes? This can be due to chimerism: two different sets of cells for eye color. If you want to make sure you are buying a true blooming chimera, you must wait until it blooms as sometimes the babies will not bloom true. Well, even with years of fallow or tolerant plants, you're still likely to have nematodes in the soil. They'll be at lower than previous numbers but will start rebuilding their populations as soon as you plant a susceptible crop. When the marigolds are used, the nematodes will infest the roots but won't be able to multiply. The marigold planting must be for an entire season with no other plants in the affected area. The common notion that one can interplant marigolds to prevent, or limit, RKN infestions is nonsense. Jean who gardened for 30-some years in SoCal, all the while dealing with plant damaging RKNs.

It was said: "I am considering the marigolds again for next year because they supposedly put something off thru their root system to kill bad nematodes..." Not quite right. 1. The marigolds must be a solid planting for an entire season. 2. The nematodes can attack marigold roots but don't multiply there. So bottom lines: 1.you are decreasing the nematode population, not getting rid of it. 2. You "lose" the area for the season for other things. Beyond that, are you in a region with nematode problems?

==>> is the question .. more along the lines of these words:

are there significant variation in varietals within a given family ...

if so ... the answer is yes ...

a given set of seeds.. is a function of the breeding that got you to the ultimate plant ...

and with any biological process... there is always throw backs [and we arent discussing species here ...] in the genetic material ....

what always amazed me.. is thinking about some producer producing a million little seed packs for retail sale.. and contemplating how they isolated mom and dad.. and relied on them to have marigold sex.. to the extent that they came up will 10 million little seeds.. and 99.9% of them .. come true from the packet ... according to what you planted ...

so the fact.. that you may have planted one pack of seed and came up with two differing plants.. does not surprise me.. as much as the rest all came out as was predicted...

there is always that weird cousin .. who is a little off.. and the family accepts them.. but doesnt talk about it .. lol .. marigolds though.. are horrible gossips ... lol ...

ps: and if you had them in the same spot last year.. perhaps this was a rogue seedling from last year procreation

Following linaria's link and the links to where they took me I have decided I most probably have Tagetes tenuifolia (Seed distributed by someone at the senior center who said she had grown them for decades.) and T. patula (From WalMart.).

I much prefer the taller one with the smaller single flowers for no particular reason I can iterate.
