trying to remember an annual name...

While visiting a friend last night, we spied some flowers in the neighbors yard and I will swear that they were what I used to call a 'false poinsettia'. I cannot recall the botanical name of the plant, only that it is an annual and seed was always available for it in the spring catalogs. Am I crazy? : ) google search shows nothing, so I thought I would tap into a real resource and see if any of you know of this plant too. Thanks!

Amaranthus tricolor, maybe? I think it's sometimes called summer poinsettia.

Coincidence here....'false Poinsettia', 'Fire on the Mountain' was written up in our local paper this weekend. So if it's not the Amaranthus that audrey suggests, you might look up Euphorbia cyathophora. Of the two, my bet is on the Amaranthus.

If not either of these suggests, you might give us a couple of hints about the appearance of this plant. ;-)

That would be my guess too. Did they stay closed on cloudy days? The scientific name is Dimorphoteca, if I remember right. I grew them a number of years ago and loved them. I just sowed them outside directly in the ground.
