making more bulbs?

Okay, I have a question that I am sure one of you can answer. I have lots of bulbs in my gardens--tulip, muscari, daffs, naked ladies, calla, caladium, spanish bluebells, acidanthera muriale, glads, hyacinth etc. Some of them multiply very well on their own--such as the muscari and the daffs. But the tulips, hyacinth, and naked ladies never seem to re-produce. I think that out of my 8 naked ladies, I only had one that had given another bulb when I dug them to move them a couple of weeks ago. And the tulip and hyacinth have given nothing that I have noticed. How can I get more bulbs from them? I remember reading a long time ago that the best way to do this is to take a melon baller and scoop a bit out of the side of the bulb. Is this correct? Or is there some other way?
