Corn Plan and request for comments

Would appreciate comments and suggestions on this corn schedule for the spring. I have read that synergistic varieties such as serendipity and honey select don't need isolation. Do they need isolation from each other and can they be grown with other types?

My fields are really just small adjacent plots able to handle about 50 plants each (5 rows x 10 plants). The only isolation I can provide is time and I have attempted to plant the fast growers first to get a bit more time separation on tasseling.

Honey Select 79 days 2-Jun, SYN

Serendipity 82 days, 2-Jun, SYN

Sugar Dots 85 days, 16-Jun, SU

If you don't want varieties to cross, keep them separated by time. I wouldn't want Honey Select and Serendipity to cross just because they are related.

I would move Extra Tender up to about May 10..Honey Select to May 22..Serendipity up a couple days..Sugar Dots about June 10 and Silver Queen about June 20. That Silver Queen might not do well planted late as the daylight hours shrink near maturity.

Silver Queen will be a problem with your proposed planting date. It is a long season corn and will still be growing way too late in the fall.

Ganesh, The term "various sources" means that you want compost that is created from different things, such as: mushroom compost (based on mushrooms as the main ingredient), then cow compost (based on cow manure as the main ingredient). Mel suggests that you use five different types of compost. In my first SFG, I used mushroom, horse, cow and some homemade compost. I firmly believe homemade is the best because you add so many different ingredients. I've added both kangaroo and chicken manure to my compost barrel, along with horse poo (from horses riding down the street).

I tried 44 SF of corn last year planting essentially according to Mel's spacing. It was way too close and the cobs never fully formed. It ended up as chicken and goat feed. I will not be doing corn again. Too little return for the space requirements. That said, as long as you are only doing one variety, succession planting should work. I did 2 varieties and I got cross pollination, which was bad. So I guess if you can plant all you want of everything else in one bed, go for it, just don't overcrowd the corn and don't let it shade your other bed when it gets too tall. Thanks for the candid replies. I am flattered - my plans are only as awful as the Architect's :-) (I know I am making assumptions here :-) ) Summerfield's plan gave us hope that a nice plan can be done despite the dimension restrictions we have due to this property's shape (more width than depth) and the fact that we want a ranch. DCRanger - I wasn't able to determine the square footage of Summerfield's plan. Original plan was 2367 and Summerfield was aware of our desire to keep the square footage in that neighborhood, so it must be close. Smaller the better for us. We continued to draw for the following reasons: 1. We like lot of sun and light in the house even though we are aware of downside of too much sun. 2. The two guest bedrooms will be used very infrequently, so wanted to move them away from sunny part of the house. 3. Living room, being that it is behind the covered porch won't get much winter sun. In my design, with proper overhang, we will get full winter sun and no summer sun. Front porch stops winter sun - mostly from entry area. 4. Wanted to avoid a third bathroom. My drawings are meant to convey the location of rooms in conformity with our likes and dislikes. We would highly appreciate detailed comments about my drawings. Thanks. AJ

Half of the existing patio slab is going to be completely removed because it's badly cracked, including the entire raised area were the hot tub used to be. Any remaining portion will be cut back to accommodate an appropriate footer. Completely new slab with monolithic pour onto of any existing slab to bring everything up to the height of the existing house slab (so there is no step down into the new room) As far as the bathroom goes, there is absolutely no other place to put it but somewhere on that exterior wall (because of the lot layout) No location on that wall is going to have an impact on angles to tap into an existing drain location or to a main line. So if the floor has to be raised to get enough slope, that's what is going to have to be done. We have no issue with it, should it need to be done.

I'm zone 7 as well with a growing season for corn from late March thru October. My plan is one early maturing variety planted very early, late March. This variety must have tolerance to cold soil in early spring. Then starting in early April the soil is warm enough to plant the same full season variety every 2-3 weeks. Actual planting date is based on size of the prior planting. When a prior planting reaches about 6-8 inches tall, I plant another planting. This gave 7 plantings last year and 9 the year before that.

I have corn to eat from mid June until early November.

By planting the same variety every 2-3 weeks there are no pollination issues and a constant supply of corn. My last planting of a ~76 day corn is about August 1. So far no freeze injury on either end of the season.

I'm changing varieties in 2011, all from Harris seed. Thinking Sweet Chorus, SB 67 day, as an early. It's supposed to be a very strong grower in cold soil and good quality. For all later plantings I may try 7002R, shA and 72 day, for it's quality and resistance to leaf rust. Leaf rust gets bad here on the last 3-4 plantings.

Will the two synergistic varieties cross pollinate? The catalogs seem to indicate otherwise.

Could be wrong. But the two SYN will cross pollinate but it won't have any effect on taste. If one is yellow and one white, they may both end up mixed but that won't affect eating quality.

I think you've got too many varieties for that small a space. I agree with the others that Silver Queen may not produce well planted that late. And I worry that your SH2 might cross causing starchy kernels with your proposed June 2 sowings. I might suggest keeping Sunglow as your 1st early (Sunglow has never failed me!), then like Fruitnut says pick one of the SY or SH2 midseason varieties and sow it every 2-3 weeks.
