Depth of new soil over clay

Just moved to a new house and need to make new raised beds. The soil is "gumbo clay". I'll bring in new garden soil mix, mixed in with 1/3 compost, to put on top.

My question is how deep do the raised beds with new soil need to be to grow all sorts of organic veggies? I've read that 8" is sufficient. Should it be deeper, like 12 or 16"? Do I need to ammend the clay soil first by tilling in some compost?

I'm a bit spoiled. At my other house, I had huge, prolific plants. But, I had ammended the clay soil first, brought it 12" of garden soil, removed the grass, etc. It was A LOT of work. I may have gone overboard in a way that I did not really need to. Looking for others with the same experience.
