Unless you plan on underwatering your garden or overapplying N, I'm not sure why there is a concern.

NOxs accumulate in plants when they can't use the N. This means overapplication or underwatering. Surely if you are going to underwater, you won't like the look or taste of the crop and won't have the opportunity to consume the toxic tissue.

Apply the fertilizer like you are supposed to. Water according to the plant's needs.

This is a myth. Plants are more than capable of taking up more than they need of nutrients. Organic/synthetic is of no importance here. Another issue is excessive salt accumulation in the soil and again, this can happen with organics and synthetics.

Just ask the person who over applies blood meal.

Plants are susceptible to toxicity issues from excessive nutrients/salts regardless of the synthetic/organic distinction.

It is common in organic circles to hear 'poisonous chemicals' 'toxic this and toxic that' as it relates to the use of synthetic fertilizers, but there is no truth in it, it is just one of those myths that some subscribe to and some seem to hold to the dogma like a religion even after being shown facts to the contrary.

Having said that, I wouldn't advise getting into a quarrel with a spouse over the issue. :)

People have been eating non organic produce for a very long time with no ill effects.
Using synthetic fertilizers/ chemicals...
A) produces a much larger crop in a farm setting.
B) create cheaper food because it can be concentrated for shipping.
C) saves huge numbers of fields that would otherwise be destroyed by insects.

I don't look down on people who choose to eat only organic food, but cannot imagine why someone would pay $3.50 for 2-3 organic apples when you can buy the same type only non-organic for 1.50.
People do this just to avoid harmful chemicals that won't hurt you anyway. I live in an area with many orchards and fields. Some are certified "organic" while others are not. Most of the time an "organic" orchard/field is right next to a non organic orchard/field and the wind carries the chemical sprays into the neighboring "organic" orchard/field. These, then tainted, "organic" apples/other produce proceed to be harvested and sold as organic with the consumer being none the wiser. Nothing can help the wind carrying the chemical, and one surely cannot move an orchard to a safe distance. Moreover, a field/orchard may be grown non-organicly one year then rented out to an organic grower who just grows the crop for the year in an "organic" way. Especially with the orchards, this should not be considered organic since trees store the nutrients from the previous year, that were given to the tree with synthetic fertilizers, to produce the current year's fruit. Organic in the store is not as organic as they make you think.
Chemical use, in moderation, is a positive modern convenience that has helped bring the cost of food down while producing better quality and yields at the same time. More people should be educated in what it means to be organicly grown, like doused with blood containing parasites and disease all in the name of fertilization with no regard to sanitation. Then,I think the devout organic people would decide to grow a garden and eat nothing pasturized.
I like being able to bite into an apple and not find worm holes. Synthetic chemicals provides that cheaply and extremely effectively to the masses. The pros outweigh the cons when it comes to chemical use.

More devil's advocate here. Personally I'm doing synthetic because I have a lot around.

Some of the synthetic fertilizers are derived from petroleum products. Do you think that is an issue? Fertilizer cost increased this past year when oil went up. So that is a decent part of why we had higher food prices.

Also, overproduction of food in the U.S. has encouraged excess weight gain. And with the farm subsidies, we can dump agricultural products on other countries at prices that they can't compete with. So we are fueling the poverty of rural areas and forcing more displaced farmers to migrate to the cities or to other countries where they can become a social problem. We don't donate enough food to poor countries, and when we do, they can become dependent on the supplies and not grow their own food.

Of course, with the global food shortage/increased prices going on, more of us in developed countries are growing food/veggies for personal consumption. No idea how that affects global demands for either fertilizer or produce.

Tell that to the feminized amphibians or the dead zones in the oceans, eutrophic rivers, etc. There are numerous reasons to go organic - being lazy about spreading too much fertilizer and pesticide isn't one of them.

But back OT, there is no valid reason to think that synthetic fert will poison you thru plant tissue.
