HELP!! My Petunias Keep Dying!

I planted white petunias in front of my house this spring as a design plan with my small red roses and juniper bushes. They all grew beautifully. Now since it is summer, the petunias have died on the left side of my house. The other side is still flourishing. When I replant petunias on the dead side, in a week or so, they die. I could pull them up from the ground with no problems. It was like the roots rotted or something! I don't know what is going on. I thought maybe it is too wet on one side because the water drains slower there. Do petunias like alot of water? I don't know what kind of petunias these are, but I got them from Home Depot, and they are not the "wave" kind. (what is the difference between petunias anyway??) Both of my flower beds get the same amount of water. I have some verbenas there too, they are doing fine. Could it be the weather? It has been between 80 and 97 degreees here in Northern Mississippi. Are my petunias dying because that bed is by my walkway to the porch?? I noticed some flowers with bites on them in both beds, but the bed on the right side of the house is still beautiful and bushy, even with bites and alot of sun. Now my whole design plan is ruined. I have one side of my house full of white petunias, and the other side has only two. The two that are left are slowly dying too. I am tired of buying petunias. I may have to dig them up and plant something else if it is not too late. Help.

There are several possibilities...one is you are not watering as well as you think. And the second is some chemical in the soil there. If you lived further north I might suspect it was icemelt ...but not likely where you are. Did you fertilize your flowers? Petunias are tough....the only time I have ever had a petunia die was one time when I over fertilized them.

The only way to tell about moisture is to dig down to root level and see if it's soggy or bone dry. A combination of high heat and humidity along with poorly draining soil can cause rot in a hurry. You might need to heavily amend or replace much of the soil - have other plants grown well in that spot?

as i understand it ... you bought these pre-planted ... which to me means OVER planted ... for fast sale and immediate gratification ... if they are flopping every night after being in the blistering sun during the high heat of the day ... that means the roots are too jammed in what little potting media there is ... there isnt enough media.. to hold the water they need the ONLY solution.. FOR NEXT YEAR ... is bigger permanent pots ... with enough media ... to sustain the plants for the season ... and just enough plants to grow in such .... but you will have to wait a month or two.. for them to fill up the pot ... i would bet my shiny nickle... if you took the pot apart.. and tipped out the root mass.. you would be hard pressed to find any media.. to hold water.. for the whole day ... these pots need to go in shade.. during the heat of the day.. and you will probably find.. that they can actually making it thru the day ... without looking like a bunch of wilted cut flowers ... yes.. i know.. that defeats the purpose you bought them for... but them dying does also ... put them in the patio in the yard in the shade.. and you can enjoy them for the rest of summer ... ken

I have some wonderful Top-Setting Garlic, planted last March that I brought from my parents' garden in Idaho, Zone 4. They grow tiny bulbs on the flower and many of those sprout and make flowers of their own..some of which make a 3rd sprout. All without ever touching the ground. Hopefully I will have some of the tiny bulbs available on the Seed Trading Forum this fall.Read up on them a bit and found out they were considered extinct for a few decades so I want to do my part to help spread them out to as many gardeners nationwide as possible so that never happens again. They also set normal-sized underground bulbs that can be dug and used or divided after the 2nd Fall. Only place they don't seem to thrive is zones 9,10, and 2.

Kite, Rhizo's right about ivy's being difficult to grow indoors. Rhizo, before I continue, I have a question for you. Although Hedera Helix is hardy, are variegated types as hardy? English and Bostons even thrive here in IL, but I've never seen any variegated types, not in this part of IL..Boston grows on brick, but don't know if they redden naturally or from sun and chilly air. What do you think? Kite, did you want to grow outdoors or try indoors? Do you have a cool room? Enclosed porch, etc. The cooler the better. Variegated Ivy is a beautiful plant, especially types with deep variegation. But Variegated need more sun than strickly green. Low light causes spindly growth despite color. If you place your ivy in a bright window, w/cooler temps, 'away from gas heat,' ventilation, and spray the leaves daily, it should do fine. If the room is hot, dry and stuffy, Spider Mites will attack. In winter, water less. Don't keep soil constantly wet, it needs to dry between drinks, especially if your winters are always gray. I withhold fertilizer during winter, but depending where you are in Tn, if days have more sun than clouds, 1/4-1/2 strength will suffice. Is your ivy hanging or staked? Toni

I doubt you killed your clematis, but you may have cracked the fragile stems at the base. Keep treating the roots like they are alive and you will probably get new shoots coming up. Best practice is to prune the clematis back hard before you plant leaving only about 6 inches of growth or taller so you have a few sets of leaves. There isn't a leader vine. Sweet Autumn grows fast, so keep watching it so you can try to guide the stems. I add bone meal the way Chalk Hill recommends, but it isn't required. I don't take out the supports that came in the nursery pot unless they fall off. I try to cause as little disruption to the roots as possible. I do take off the twist ties though and use my own. Tightly tying the vine to your support isn't good. I use velcro straps to hold the vines in place. It doesn't take long for the tendrils to grab on, so as soon as it does, the straps can be removed. What I try to do when planting a new clematis is plant it at an angle towards the support. That way the vines will already be growing in the right direction. To help it along, I might add a couple of lengths of thin bamboo on either side of the root mass and use these to help guide the vine. It also serves to protect the vine (somewhat) from dog feet. Where practical, I will use the velcro pieces to hold the bamboo to the support, but most of the time it can just rest on the support because the soil holds it in place.

My petunias die at the root first and then the rest of the plant dies. I have replaced the plants with the same results. Same thing last year. I planted wave petunias this year. Only about every other one is affected and in other flower beds no problem at all. It is a mystery. Agway sid it might be slugs, so I spread slug bait and waiting to see what happens.
I have a suspicion that it is a soil problem!!!!!!

It is probably a nematode or soil fungus. It is not recommended to plant petunias or pansies in the same place year after year in warm climates, because plant-specific pathogens build up in the soil. I had to stop planting petunias for a while. I have also had trouble with pansies when I plant them in the same spot two years running. Of course, those are the only plants that look good in those particular spots!

Hi, I am having the same problem with my Petunias. They are in a window box on my deck and only the right window box on the very end towards the right is dying.
My question is could this be due to bird droppings (poop) I have a bird feeder on the right side at that end of the dying petunias? HELP !!! I don't like seeing my what was amazing Petunias dead . I live in the New England Area

how often do you replace the media in your boxes??

katie ... your own post???? .. a picture might sure help ...

and tell me the difference between right and left.. east/west.. n/s?? ... one has sun morning.. the one affected is in hot afternoon sun..

you really havent given us much to go on..

I have the same problem in a local bed mirroring another five feet away. All the other shrubs and perennials are fine, the slugs have been maintained, and still I'm having rot. Watering is the same as the other bed, sun exposure etc. I've replaced them several times this season with the same wilting result within days/week. It seems they cannot soak up water. Soil test confirmed localized ph variations of too high, and it looks more and more like a soil borne problem.

Ken is most likely on the right track. Here in Meridian, Mississippi, petunias of any sort rarely last much past June, because they do not like the extreme heat we get in our summers. This year, June was really more like August, so petunias did even worse. I am guessing that your plants that survived were getting enough shade during the day to allow them to hang on. Next year, maybe you should try white Vinca or White Profusion zinnias or even a white Penta in front of your roses. If they are getting all day sun, these are highly likely to be star performers the entire season.
