I had intended to raise the planting bed by adding some really good compost. However, before I got to it, the flowers started to peak their little heads out. Can I apply a foliar fertilizer? I've got to give them something.

Hi Christina, You should wait til the Daffs are done blooming to move them. Make sure you dig deep to get the whole bulb (at least 6 inches) they should also be replanted at this depth. The Glads can be transplanted now without any harm. Get some bulb fertilizer and add a shot of that too. Jen

You won't kill them if you move them now, but you may sacrifice some blooms (and you may not, but it is a risk). If you can wait until after they bloom (should be finished blooming in the next two months) then you would be sure to enjoy the blooms this year. Then you could certainly move them.

If you can manage to dig them up with a large clump of soil around the bulb, they'll probably bloom where you transplant them. If you disturb the roots too much, you may lose or stunt this year's bloom, but they should recover by next year, especially daffodils, which are quite sturdy. Many Tulips, unless they are species Tulips or close to the species, decline over a few years anyway. Serious Tulip growers often dig them up after they bloom and discard them, planting new bulbs in the fall. Give your tranplanted bulbs a bit of bulb food after they bloom and leave the foliage alone until it turns yellow on its own.
