Containers need more frequent watering than plants in the ground. A selection of succulents in orange and turquoise tones would look very nice with your house color and brick. Know in advance the mature size of the plants you select -- some succulents can become tree-like. If you wish, add some blue fescue for softness. Because it is a small area, you could splurge on some fancier rock, such as coral with sea shells and sea glass mixed in. Or rounded river rock can be appealing, with a few larger, angular rocks deeply set for accents. First make sure the bed is weed free. If needed, improve the soil so that drainage is sharp -- succulents don't want to sit in wet soil. If you plan to use drip irrigation, plot your drip lines. Lay down a heavy layer of plastic, cut holes and plant your succulents. Spread your rock over the plastic. Stand back and admire your work.

Hi Lisa! I have Tiger Lilies (that my neighbor also gave me a few years ago) along the east side of the house. The area probably gets even less sun than yours because of nearby shrubs. They seem to do fine out there. I don't think these lilies are very fussy. Have you ever noticed those little black 'beads' on the leaf right by the stem? Those are miniature bulbs. If you plant those in the ground they will sprout. I have a few popping up around the base of the parent plant. Very cool! PS. I have also read that Tiger Lilies should not be planted next to other lilies becasue they carry a virus that can mutate other lilies. I planted mine in an isolated spot. CMK

That general theory about blues and golds works well,unless it's this time of year when trees are not yet leafed out,so you get full sun whether you like it,or not. Combine that with extreme dry conditions like we are having here in the south,and we hope our hostas make it until rain returns. We also had 88 degrees today! Let's all keep our fingers crossed! Lilium henryi is from China where it grows in mountainous, forested regions. It is not at all tolerant of hot, dry conditions. Make sure it has plenty of shade in summer and a lot of organic compost (leaf mold) round the roots. It gets a terrific amount of rain in summer but is almost dry in winter.If you don't get any of those plains thunderstorms, you might consider watering a bit. Good luck.
