Have I killed my bulb? (Haemanthus)

I had a Haemanthus albiflos which sat in an office without any growth for years, and the soil and pot were encrusted with minerals and guk so i wanted to repot it. Due to my mishandling, all remaining roots, which were dry, were severed. I tried repotting it which only started it rotting. So I removed and cleaned the bulb, which is now tunicless and rootless. It still has its leaves but the bulb is now completely white (no covering). Is that the end of this bulb's life or is there a way to get it rooted again without it rotting? Anyone know? Appreciate any suggestions.
