I just tried the EE the first time this summer, someone gave me a huge bulb. It grew lightning fast to start with, then I began experiencing the same problems you are having. The water just seemed to lay on top and slowly bubble down through and I couldn't seem to water it enough. I decided to put it in the flower bed as we were going on vacation and there was no one here to water it. When I removed it from the pot, I was in shock as to how rootbound it was. It has only been in the pot 2 months and was already seriously rootbound. It is doing much better since it is planted in the ground. I know I will have to dig it in the fall, but next year I will use a MUCH larger pot. Arlene

Hannah, Yellowing between the veins of older leaves generally indicates a lack of a transportable nutrient, such as Magnesium. What is the analysis of the Plantacote? It could be that it is too slow releasing for the needs of the A. x calidora. These plants are very vigorous and that means they need enough nutrients to sustain that growth. Otherwise, they will decline and die down or out. I give my host of Alocasia hybrids a soluble fert solution every week and I use a higher nitrogen mix as well, occasionally supplementing with extra iron and manganese. Even under these conditions, some of mine get a little pale from time to time, especially in the summertime growing months. Many, if not most, of these Alocasia like well draining soil mix as well, so if your soil is heavy and wet, that might be part of the problem. Healthy roots are a must for proper nutrient uptake. I'd probably dig those guys up and see if the soil around the bulb is very dry or if there is something eating them. If it's dry or looks bad, you can just amend with compost, sand, greensand, zeolite and/or lava sand. Last year I had a similar problem with some of mine. A whole section of EEs curled up and died for no apparent reason, while EEs right next to them were fine. I dug up the dead ones and found that an armadillo had burrowed underneath it, and the bulb had no soil around it at all. Armadillos are very hard to get rid of and no amount of amending helped because she just dug everything out again within a few days. I also think there are critters that munch on EE bulbs. I don't often move mine around, but on occasion have done so and noticed tracks where something chewed it's way across the surface of the bulb. Well, they do kind of resemble a giant kohlrabi. Mine is the exact same way. It will grow a new one and an older one will die. It never had more that 5 leaves at one time.
