Mills Magic Mix or Rose Tone
Comments (21)I remember reading this somewhere - "Roses are hogs - feed 'em". The article said something to the effect of never mind getting technical - just get a good fertilizer and feed regularly. For whatever reason I have remembered that. I can get MM Mix in Houston at Southwest Fertilizer - they also have their own mix that is very similiar and costs less. I am a member of the Houston Rose Society and in February, there is "rose week" where rose products are discounted 15% off. I go to Houston, lunch with a friend and buy all my Mills Mix then. However, this year they were totally out of it so I bought their mix. I have not seen any difference. I also use Rose Tone. I suppose because I dont feed just one thing, I cant tell if one is better than the other. I have a friend who is an expert gardner - he buys the cheaper K-Mart fertilizer instead of the Miracle Gro - says it does the same thing. I am sure no expert rose grower like so many knowledgable people on this forum, but I have had good luck top dressing with rotted horse compost [I raise horses so its in good supply] and using fish emulsion, the Houston Rose Society mix, Miracle Gro for Roses, Rose Tone, Mills Mix, Carl Pool BR 61 - or whatever else I find that looks good. Seems to work well....See MoreStarter Tray & Kit
Comments (64)I grow all my peppers in containers. They go in a green house in April and by the end of may, they get booted out. But if you have room and resources to keep them in a bit longer, then by all means do so. The cooler nights will tend to slow their growth anyway. It isn't a big deal if the temps are staying above 45 or so, but 55 and above at night is ideal for peppers. I am not sure how big your plants are right now but it is better for them to be a little bigger when you get them outside anyway. Good luck, Bruce...See MoreEspoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus - anyone use this??
Comments (11)By fungi, I was referring to the mycorrhizae. The product has both ecto and endo mycorrhizae, in addition to the beneficial bacteria. Here's the label from espoma.com: Non-Plant Food Ingredients: Contains 5,678,688 colony forming units (CFUÂs) per lb. (378,579 CFUÂs per lb. each of the following 15 species): Bacillus subtilis Paenibacillus polymyxa Bacillus licheniformis Pseudomonas alcaligenes Bacillus megaterium Pseudomonas chlororaphis Bacillus marinus Pseudomonas putida Bacillus coagulans Acidovorax facilis Bacillus thuringiensis Arthrobacter agilis Bacillus pumilis Rhodococcus rhodochorus Bacillus lentimorbus Ectomycorrhizal Fungi: 44,200,000 propagules/lb. of the following 8 species: Pisiolithus tinctorius (40,000,000 propagules/lb.) Sizes: Available in 4 lb. and 25 lb. bags Bio-tone® Starter Plus is an all natural plant food enhanced with biostimulants, beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae. This proprietary formula works naturally within the soil to help plants establish fast, withstand environmental stress, promote deeper roots better blooms ,and improve soil structure. Microbe enhanced all natural plant food Includes both Endo & Ecto Mycorrhizae Grows larger root mass to help plants establish fast Reduces transplant loss I am a big fan of the Espoma products, mainly because they add micronutrients. Products containing mycorrhizae fungi are flooding the market this year, but I don't know what effect they really have. I know it is naturally occuring, so since I use wood mulches and compost, I may already have it in my soil. I am still pretty happy with the product. Comments (11)sampson, I've been involved in the nursery industry in various capacities for more than 25 years, as well as other retail sales positions. Believe me when I say they ARE trying to up-sell - it is a basic fact of retail life.......ANY retail life!! It is common enough that it is a topic for discussion in most nursery management texts. And Babs is correct as well. Nurseries are not hotbeds of current advised or recommended horticultural practices. One receives all manner of outdated planting or gardening info from them. In fact, finding nursery personnel with considerable or even up-to-date horticultural backgrounds tends to be the exception rather than the rule. It is not that they are trying to deceive you........only that they don't really know any better. Most nursery positions are sales positions and an in-depth knowledge of what you are selling is seldom a requirement. A good sales person can sell anything......and usually sell you more than what you were looking for!!...See Moretom_n_6bzone
