wave petunia or trailing petunia

This is the first year we started petunia from seeds. Ordered 3 packs of Tidal Wave Cherry from Swallowtail Seeds (10 seeds in each pack). Had good germination and growing under light success so put these out about 3 weeks ago, all at the same time. As you can see in the photo the petunia on the left have very little foliage and on the right have plenty. I am new to Tidal Wave petunia's and really do not know how they should look this early in the growing season. Maybe someone here could help as the group on the right looks like normal trailing petunia.

Are those all the same petunia, sown and planted at the same time? If so it seems odd that the right half is so much healthier. I would have to guess there is some sort of environmental difference in the sun or soil?

My experience with tidal waves is the more you pinch them back the bushier the get. I pinch off every runner the petunia first sends out (usually four) and then often pinch off the next ones too, so that I have 10-12 runners off of each plant. Then I just let them go to town, and only cut them back later in the summer when the get straggley. But Tidal wave I have mostly grown in baskets.

I also pinch off the first few buds, and try to let the petunia get a few more leaves or runners out first.

This might be something that the ones on left can benefit from, but the ones on right seem OK for now.

It does seem like the right side has a bit of slope (but it could just be my eyes playing tricks), so it's possible they are getting the bulk of water.

If they are in the right spot, they'll grow like crazy. I had them in my front flower bed a few years ago- they grew down the front and onto my stones below. They were beatiful! They did overtake the flower bed- I thinnk I had them about 12" apart- they were the flower packs, not seeds.I haven't planted them since then b/c I want all perennials now. Good Luck!~Maria

Yes, trailing plants can be planted in the ground - that's where they normally grow. ;o) Mounding petunias will eventually trail if they spill over the edge of the container, but it may take awhile, and some growers might have trouble with their plants 'petering out' before they get long enough to trail. My favored petunia is 'carpet' petunia. Very floriferous with extremely tight nodes, so they tend to not get as leggy as others, like 'wave', but they still trail nicely if that's your aim. I prune as I go - making sure there are trailing stems at intervals & plenty of secondary stems ready to take their place as a result of secondary branching coming on behind the pruning/pinching cuts. The added air-flow and reduced root growth from thinning usually has mine looking good from Jun until the frost takes them in late Sep or Oct. I have grown them all plus the Ramblin and Raptides. They all did very well and share identical growth habits and bloom earlier than the original purple and pink waves. Shock waves are smaller flowered the color Denim was a favorite of my customers along with pink vein. Easy wave plum vein was a winner as well as Raptide sunshine which is a color you don't find in trailing petunias... Bob.
