Whats eating the tops of my tulips??
Comments (9)Well thats why I figured it was deer or rabbits because they chewed off the leaves that emerge first out of the soil. The flower stems are starting to grow up on most of them so I am keeping them sprayed with Liquid Fence to keep the deer away. I know the squirrels will take the bulb when you plant them so I sprinkled red pepper flakes to keep them away. I am always at battle with something. lol! I agree luvahydrangea, squirrels get into EVERYTHING! They dig the soil out of my pots, my mulch out of my beds, the seed out of my feeders, just to name a few. grrrrrr...........See MoreWhat could be eating the leaves off of my beets?
Comments (7)jbann - thanks for all the kind words! ;) Yes, got a AR Master Gardener certification way back when. Mostly it's just because I'm old and retired so have more time to hang out in the garden. :) Backyardfarming - love the mental pic of the 2 of you armed with salt shakers and looking for revenge. ;) Keep in mind that these aren't the big 2-3" slimy slugs you may have seen in the past. These guys are often no bigger than the white part of your little fingernail and will be hard to see in that mulch. I forgot to mention before that if you will pull the mulch back from your plants a bit - create a bare soil strip of a couple of inches on either side it will reduce the damage some. It's a temporary fix but they do love to hide in all that nice wood chip mulch - which (just between you and me) is one reason I don't like wood chip mulch in the veggie garden. I use old hay (or straw when I can get it). It has sharp edged blades which slugs hate so not only does the Sluggo get them but they get sliced and diced in the process. Now THAT is revenge. ;) Dave...See MoreWhat eats tulips?
Comments (3)Squirrels and rabbits. Squirrels also LOVE digging up the bulbs and and eating much of them. Mothballs working well this Spring. Try them....See MoreWhat's Eating my Tulip Buds?
Comments (2)IME deer tend to eat what they remove, while both squirrels and groundhogs tend to leave some of what they have removed behind. You could spray them with something like Deer Off that makes them smell and taste unpleasant. I think it needs to be resprayed after rain, though when I used it on shrubs for the winter, I mixed it with Wiltpruf so that it wouldn't wash off....See Moresocalgal_gw Zone USDA 10b Sunset 24
