Can I still direct-sow fragrant sweet peas?

I am in zone 5a....haven't really grown sweet peas.

I have an area that gets sun and a little shade too where I hoped I could try growing them - direct sown though. Is it too late?

Renee's Garden site says to plant 1" deep in furoughs of compost/rich soil. Our summers can get hot(85-95)& humid too.

What would be the MOST FRAGRANT and/or earliest to bloom (since I've started so late)?

Do I HAVE to protect them with bird netting, or is this just a regional thing? Can I plant against a split rail fence instead of wire mesh or a teepee?

Thanks!
