Help Crown Imperial´s did not bloom this year

I have about 150 Fritillaria imperialis (Crown ImperialÂ´s) and only 7 are going to bloom this year , last year all bloomed but 3 . Last year we had a long hard winter the ground was frozen from December until the end of March and this year we have had a really mild winter. this is the second year for the bulbs and they have multipiled like crazy , some of the bulbs have 4 and 5 sprouts . does anyone have any sugestions for me.

Hi Kenny, I think that Frit. imperialis is a bit notorious for this and why many people grow F. eduardii which is similar in size but blooms very reliably without any bad smell like F. imperialis. I do think there is something to the temperature though as I have quite a few species (I only keep a few of each species) and many seem to have been put off by our very warm winter we had so they are just not blooming...some had buds, but they refused to develop completely. I have a few F. imperialis 'argenteovariegata' (the white edged leaf form that should not be confused with aureomarginata) and they did the same thing....a few had buds, but none actually opened them up for all to see. Hi Dan , Thanks for such a quick answer :-) , do you think I shoud feed them good during the growing season and divide them when the foliage dies back ? The ones that are blooming are still single steams but not all of them are blooming either , and the ones with the mutiple stems are a lot weaker , it is like they a dividing them selves to death , and they are not growing a straight as last year, a lot of them are really leaning

Well, it doesn't sound like too much nitrogen. Most likely too little water; a tree that size on drip would probably need 6 to 8 emitters to get enough water. Lemons should be deep watered about once per week; and be sure you are putting the fertilizer at the drip line, or in a circle with a diameter equal to the height of the tree; that stimulates new feeder roots and new growth, upon which the blossoms and fruit are borne.

In my iffy ZONE - a glimmer of hope on ES blooms at last!!! My 2 ES relocated to (perhaps their best site/part-shade) in mid-Apr ... Keeping in mind George's logical summation in this thread, I promised to leave them alone & just wait patiently. I counted more than 20 broccoli-like clusters on #1 & 16 on #2 ... hurray!!! Even the couple of canes with bud clusters that poked thru the burlap covers & got frost bitten (during those 4 sub-freezing overnights, in late Apr) are doing OK albeit w/ obvious burn marks (curious to see how those 2 buds look when they open up). note: I flat/board protected them last Winter as I wanted to save their old canes ... they were greening when I opened them in Mid-Apr. - dug up & relocated. Also, took great care & got the entire root balls. I hope yours also reward, after initial disappointments!

Pond iris bloomed last year but not this year. Help?

Your pond is so pretty! It looks very natural in that setting. You can divide them now. They're past the point where they would bloom if they were going to anyway. And I agree - you can't put them in the bottom of your pond, as it would be too deep for them anyway. But if there's a way you can plant them out of the pots (like between the rocks, on the pond side) it would be better for both the irises, as they would be able to spread more naturally, and better for your pond, as plants IN the water are better able to take up nutrients from the water which would help with your algae issue. I am not a fan of chemical algae fixes. To use it effectively you should be removing as much of the string algae as possible by hand before you treat. If you don't, all the dead algae in your pond will simply perpetuate the problem of feeding more algae. So if you have to remove it manually anyway, then what's the point of using the chemical? Number two - chemicals don't just kill the algae. They kill lots of the little microscopic critters that live in, and help balance, your pond ecosystem. Even without fish you have a lot of life in your pond. Chemicals, in my opinion, only keep the bad cycle going. Work to balance your pond and you will find your water clears up. You said you have no fish, however look at all the trees and organic material that surrounds your pond. Any of that that ends up in the pond contributes to the conditions that algae loves. Consider the algae just a symptom - it's not really a problem in and of itself. Other than being unsightly that is. But it's telling you something about your pond and is in fact working to help clean it up.

Plumeria bloomed normally last year- this year blossoms won't open

I experienced the problem last year. Five inflos and not a single flower. Have three inflos this year and the chutes were drying up and falling off just as last year. I have increased my watering over the past couple of weeks and they seem to be ready to bloom and have two additional inflos on other plants now. I was also using bloom booster, but stopped when I upped the watering. I'll keep you posted, but I think I was letting the soil get too dry before watering. Like KMS said above, mine have to be in pots so I stopped the bloom booster about four weeks ago.

Hi Kenny,

I always fertilize all of my bulbs heavy, but that is just me!! The leaning is likely just because they are a bit crowded from the multiple growth spikes. You can easily get multiple growth spikes from a single bulb by the way....I can guarantee you all of my F. imperialis are single bulbs in the pot, but they are all producing multiple growths this year.....completely normal as far as I know. You must really like these a lot to have so many! Do you have multiple variants?? Do you know either Janis Ruksans in Latvia or Leonid Bondarenko in Lithuania?? They have quite a collection of Frits for sale, including some of their own F. imperialis variants. It really sounds like your Frits are doing great, but I think they are sort of famous for this behaviour and I am not sure what it is that they need to behave more nicely. I have crown imperials also. I am wondering how you go about dividing them, I have searched for images of these bulbs with offsets on them but cannot find any. nor can I find a video on it either. Any help would be great.
