Overwintering elms in the fridge/freezer?

I discovered a local nursery today that has a small but interesting collection of plants specifically for bonsai material. They have several excellent specimens of Ulmus x elegantissima 'Jacqueline Hillier' that I fell in love with. They are still small (4-6" tall) but cheap at $7 each. I want to go back and buy one or two, but they would not be fully hardy this far north (MN, Z4). Instead of attempting to overwinter them outdoors and insulate the heck out of them in larger pots, could I place them in the fridge from late Nov-Feb when the temps start to drop below zero, and then move them back outdoors in the early spring to initiate normal bud-break? I have a mini-fridge that I can crank down to 25F that could hold a bonsai specimen.

Does anyone think this would work? If not, what else could I do to get them to survive? Thanks.
