Fresh Cut Hyacinths - Do I store them in water or not ?

I just picked up some cut Hyacinth.

The packing clearly says to not CUT the stem at all.

Am I supposed to keep the stems in water at least ?

You sure got my curiosity up, so I did a bit of searching. I found this on line.

Occasionally, cut hyacinths are available "on the bulb"... in other words, with the upper half of the bulb still attached to the bottom of the stem. Hyacinths like this are generally imported from Holland, and are shipped in a rather immature state. The remaining portion of the bulb provides the extra energy needed for the hyacinth flowers to continue to grow and open. And, the hyacinth bulb itself can be an interesting design element in a floral arrangement.
Do they look like they have part of the bulb still attached? If so I'd guess that it would not be put in water...And, the hyacinth bulb itself can be an interesting design element in a floral arrangement.

I also think I have seen/read where the bottom of the stems are sometimes seared with fire to seal them. If that might be the case, then yes, you would put them in water.

Does the paperwork maybe give any other clues? I'm curious as to what others here might know.

Nope. No bulbs at all. The bottoms look like oversized white mushrooms ;-) -- but it's flush with the stalk

Actually they would be better off in shallow layers in shallow cardboard boxes...think 'flats', like canned good come in. Then the flats should not be stacked. Or just hang the mesh bags. Beware, some mesh looking bags are actually plastic bags, cut to look like actual mesh bags. Don't use them if they appear to be plastic. I use some plastic bins, but they have a grid on the bottom and all 4 sides and have no tops on them. They are in shallow layers in the bins and I turn (stir them up, or flip the bags) every so often. They are on my carport where they get good air and are kept dry. Good luck!

When you get ready to replant them just cut the stem at an angle, rub the area with a rooting paste, stick it in water and then put it in a pot of soil or stick it in the ground. I started some from seed and left them in the ground all winter and got too many plants. Hurricane Ike damaged some very big ones in the front yard and I have been giving stems to anyone that passes by. Of course down here they grow fast. Yours should do well also.

sally2- What you wrap your bread in depends on what TYPE of bread it is to begin with - enriched or lean - what characteristics are you trying to achieve - better crumb or crust - and how long it needs to be stored and remain fresh. As an example: If I make a loaf of crustless sandwich bread in a Pullman Pan (which is an enriched bread with a very close/tight crumb), and the loaf is going to be used for sandwiches and sliced in thin slices, I will wrap the loaf while still slightly warm in order to maintain the soft crumb I want/need for sandwiches. I know from the science involved (and experience), the loaf will cut better the next day when the starches are "set", and because it was tightly wrapped in plastic wrap it will maintain the soft crumb, characteristic of sandwich bread. Or, if I make a small lean free-form loaf that will be used within 24-48-hours, I might up-end the loaf with the cut end on a breadboard and cover it with a light cotton cloth or place the loaf in a cloth bread bag in order to maintain the crust. I wouldn't want a soft crust in this case, so a tight wrapping of a plastic bag or plastic wrap wouldn't be the correct application. When I teach bread classes, I spend a lot of time teaching about the science of bread staling in order to understand the finer points about how to store different types of breads. People who convert to homemade bread often have one big complaint, it doesn't stay fresh long enough....and that's because they may not be storing it correctly, or packaging it at the best time, or choose the wrong type of bread for what they are needing it for. Storing a freshly-baked loaf of bread isn't a one-method-fits-all, at least from what I've studied on the subject. -Grainlady

if you are going to split it by hand, you definitely want to do it now while it is still "green". oak gets hard when it dries and will give you a workout if you don't have the proper tools and knowledge to use them! if you use a hydraulic splitter, you can split them later, but it will delay the drying. i have used oak after 1 year of seasoning, but it burns MUCH better the 2nd year.

hmmm.....Where did you get them? Purchase locally? on line? gift?

Is there any way you can ask them maybe?

To me it kind of sounds like they have in some way sealed/prepped them for going into water...but again, I am just guessing, and would hate to steer you wrong. I'd sure like to know whatever you find out.

Where is everyone 'in the know' this AM?

Nevermind...

Just went to the manuf. website which was on their wrapping paper :-)
Flowers were bought in one of the NYC Flower Market stores along 28th street.

When I think of bulbs, I think of roudish type profiles.
I guess the white part was the bulb.

Well, I dumped some Floralife and some water and it's sitting in water. Need to pick up another vase though.....as I didn't imagine the bunch was so big
