ok, so I picked up a bonsai kit from borders, it was on sale, thinking kewl I have always been interested in bonsai this will be fun. So I read the book and start doing some research online, and find out I actually need a tree to do anything real with it. So I start the seeds, figuring in 5-10 years I can do something with them if I dont kill it before then. While reading, I found that japanese maple make excellent bonsai, and my mom happens to have a huge japanese maple in her front yard, which has beautiful leaves.

Any way, is it possible to cut a brach from the tree and make it into a bonsai, or should I go to a store and buy a much younger one and "chop down" as I have seen mention on here numerous times?

Any and all help would be appreciated thanks in advance
