Tony, the time for putting them anywhere was in the fall, into the ground. There, they attain roots which then gives the bulbs protection against winter freezes.

Not having done that, you put them into a refrigerator and there, they received much the same cool temperatures they would have received had they gone into the ground.

So what you have are viable bulbs that have not rooted yet.

Here it is mid February....spring flowering bulbs will be shortly showing themselves in the garden. Hardly enough time to still do anything with them so you must plan on making these able to be planted in the spring. In the fridge, you could have potted them up, watered them and they would gotten their roots. At that time then, you could expect them to be able to be brought forth into sunlight where they would have flowred. Forced is what they would have been.

Now, all you can expect is once in the garden, they probably will not root up...but, if they can stand up to not rotting, they will begin their lives next fall, and appear spring of '07 as normal.

Potting them up now, watering them and keeping them in a COOL....NOT UNINSULATED...there, any water in the pot would surely freeze. Bulbs must NEVER freeze. So there you have a problem...unless you can give the bulbs the same temperatures they received in the fridge, I'm afraid you are stuck with keeping them there until you can plant them in the garden in the spring.....and leave them there.

Any foliage that might come up this spring/summer, should be left as though they had come normal. Let it die back, go yellow and shrivel up. Then the bulb can be left to do its normal thing. Flowering should result in '07.

You can probably get them to bloom in pots if you can find a place for the pots that won't freeze. Putting them in an unheated, attached garage might work -- you want the temps to be above 32 and below 50 during the rooting phase, which takes a few weeks. You could try putting the pots in big plastic storage containers and covering them with peat, or putting them up against your foundation and covering with mulch.

You can plant them shallower in pots than you would in the ground (the noses of the bulbs can poke out of the soil). Use a heavier potting mixture -- something with sand in it -- the bulbs will push themselves out of regular indoor potting soil.

After 2-3 weeks, you should see roots coming out the holes in the bottoms of your pots. At this point, you can bring the pots into a warmer area. Ideally, an area in the low 60s with light sun; after a few days of this, you can bring them inside. If you don't have an area with intermediate temps, just bring them in and slowly acclimate them to greater amounts of sunlight.

The good news is that most daffodils are extremely hardy and even if they don't bloom this year will likely survive to the next.

Thanks for the advice. I will probably try with some of them but with 50 left I don't have room to get them all in pots and store them in an appropriate place for that long.

Unfortunately my garage is not attached and has little room so I might try just a few in a couple pots and put them next to the foundation with mulch.

You could try putting one or two pots in the fridge where you had stored the bulbs; back them into the pots real tight and use 1/2 or 3/4 height pots. You might be able to get about 15-20 back into the same space where you stored the bulbs. The rest -- experiment a bit. Try some in pots under mulch and keep some in the fridge until the ground thaws and just plant them outside. Keep us posted on how they all do; I, for one, am always interested in empirical data on bulb storage and forcing.
