Is it normal for air-layer roots to turn brown?

Ran a previous msg. Can NOT post a pic as my new ISP "weekend" tech help is worthless.

Acer Palmatum. 8 thick roots in the clear plastic bag. They were white and now that they are longer (2-3") parts are coloring brownish (possibly ..pinkish sorta brown)

Doing a dance between potting now or (as advised earlier) to wait a month or so. Would hate to ROT the roots and the bag is very wet inside.

Any idea on how MANY roots are necessary for establishing in soil? 3/8" trunk at layer. Tree sorta broom style maybe 6-7" above layer.

If potting, should the sphagnum go in the soil WITH the roots.

ANY adv appreciated.

First air-layer and pretty excited that it "took."
