So I pruned my ficus...now what?

I put up a picture of my first attempt at pruning a ficus in the gallery. I remembered some of the basic rules; take leaves off the trunk and branches, wire branches down to create a heavy look, cut off twigs growing downward, don't wire too tightly, etc. Now I'm interested in knowing how to encourage branching in particular directions (the tree grew rather 2d;I'd like to encourage growth towards the back for depth). I left some leaves on the trunk in the back in the area I wanted the branching. Was that the right thing to do? How do I encourage the branches to get more tiwggy? (Twiggish? Either word is fun to say...) Is there a proper way to remove leaves? I remember something about deciding whether or not to remove the bud at the base, but I can't remember what the point of that was. Now that I've pruned it this spring, do I pretty much just let it grow until next spring, or is there anything else to do in the near future?
