Beeches can have a silvery grey bark. Along with their tendency to retain their leaves throughout the winter creates a beautiful display.

Are you sure it was an elm? I'm no expert by any means, but I know of no white bark elms. I grow zelkova which some call a gray-bark elm.

As Norm has mentioned Beeches have a light colored bark as well.

It was represented to me as a white elm and the leaves looked like elm leaves but I quess it could have been white gray-bark. It wasn't pure white but it really looked good. The price was $35 but when I tried to buy it the owner decided to keep it for herself.

One of the common names for the American Elm is White Elm. I don't think that has to do with color of the bark though. It has a gray bark. I think it gets the name from the sapwood color.

Don't see these used as bonsai much. The dutch elm disease has pretty well decimated the population.

I've noticed that Red Maples have silver/while bark.

Hi- it was probably Zelkova, they're ALmost interchangeable with elms and often get mislabelled.

Here is the dirty little secret. The one deciduous tree most often associated with a White trunk is the Japanese Beech. But this color is not natural and is often created by using a light wash of Lime Sulfur, a practice that is dangerous and possibly fatal to the tree if it is not done correctly and carefully, by someone who has experience in the practice. I do not recommend it.
