Arbors: wood vs metal vs vinyl
Comments (14)Metal fabricators sometimes have their own powdercoating booths. The guy I've used does. A flat black powder coated metal arbor will last a long, long time, but it will cost you. A good fabricator knows how stout it will need to be to have structural intergrity. Many metal ready-made arbors aren't sturdy enough for big roses in mild climates. And definitely go with a 4 foot opening. Think about 36 inches between two large climbers. Not enough space. I had a redwood 4 x 4 wooden pillar rot out at the base within 6 years. If you use wood, make sure the base is well above grade with no possibility for the wood to contact soil. That means you have to build up the concrete you set it in into a slight mound so water runs off and so the mound is above grade. This can be tough to sustain on a slope with mulch. Something about entropy. I have no experience with vinyl in the garden. I do know that there are fantastic vinyls made these days that are unbelievably UV resistant. They are used on windows and doors. Whether the same material is used on arbors....I just don't know where you'd find them....See Moremetal arbor/trellis
Comments (2)I am trying 3 black metal trellises with some climbing roses. They are on a North wall so they will get shade a lot of the time. I have one rose that is old enough to be on one of the trellises and so far so good. It made it through last summer okay. I love the metal because of the durability and looks. I tried the wooden ones and also the plastic type with no luck. Besides, we can build these to exactly what I want and usually cheaper....See MoreWhat are dis/advantages of vinyl or wood arbors?
Comments (2)Vinyl pergolas Pros: Virtually maintenance free Durable Rarely crack or split Don't need to be painted Don't sink or warp Easily cleaned Looks new for years Moving a vinyl pergola is not hard Vinyl is immune to bugs Cons: They Are Cookie-Cutter Expensive Finding Replacement Parts Can be Difficult Light weight - must be securely anchored Vines don't stick to vinyl as they will to wood Wood Pergolas Pros: Wood gazebos look classy and traditional TheyâÂÂre typically gorgeous You can easily alter the colors with oil-based stain. More style options with wood Wood is more durable Wood blends better with the landscape Cons: Wood requires a fair amount of maintenance Wood needs to be cleaned, stained, and treated to keep them in good condition Chemicals in treated wood can poison and kill some plants Wood can warp, split and splinter over time Wood welcomes termites and other kinds of critters Depending on size, once secured in place, they are too heavy to relocate...See Morevinyl or wood arbor
Comments (11)I agree and also like the look of wood. My problem is to find a good wood one without breaking the bank. New England arbors seems to be the most available in both us and Canada, but when I ask the wood ones are made of Chines wood, which seems to be wood from china which is not cedar but I cannot figure out if it is a decent wood or not....See Moreneetsiepie
