Air Layering A Japanese Maple - To Late in Season?? (Australia)

Hey, I am wondering if it is to late to Air layer a Japanese Maple, I in in Australia & it is Mid summer. I wasn't sure if it would be to late to do as there might not be enough time for sufficient healthy roots to form before winter. Any help would be good. our average temp here are Winter about 10 degree's centigrade & Summer 28 deg centigrade. Sorry I'm not good with Fahrenheit. I was hoping to have it ready for next spring to cut & re-pot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers all.

Ryan
