Raised planter box for strawberries

Rabbits ate my daughters' strawberries last year. So, this year I'm thinking of planting her strawberries in "window sill" style boxes to hang off the side of her playhouse. Can anyone give me some infomation to help with this? IE. Use potting soil, and plant strawberries directly in box? Leave holes on the bottom of the wood to let water drain out? Or build a box but plant in pots then put pots in box? IF I put in pots what size and how many plants to pot?? Just some things running through my head. Thanks for any help you can give.

Whatever container you use, make sure there are drain holes and that the soil you use is free-draining. It might be best to go with name brand bagged soil or mix up your own with plenty of drainage material mixed in (e.g., perlite). You can plant right into the box of soil.

How many you plant will depend on the size of the box and type of plant. There are strawberries that generate long runners of babies and they will spread across the box (and will actually give you more plants). Others stay fairly compact. Many people grow them in hanging pots.

Just be aware that they do like sun but because of that, the soil can dry out quickly, so you want to make sure the soil will stay moist but not soggy, especially since they are surface-rooters (consider some pine needle mulch around the plants).

Otherwise, they are easy and fun to grow!

I think I would make a hole at one of the legs, the one closes to the edge of the deck, using a plastic tubing, which I would cement into the PVC liner. This tubing I would conceal as best I could, along the leg to the deck and over the side. I would cut a piece of landscape fabric to fit the bottom of the PVC liner to prevent the mix from from plugging the drain tubing. Al

I'm not in Z3 but I do know that the amount of snow cover can make a big difference in where you can grow some plants. For example, with adequate snow cover to provide extra insulation against repeated freeze/thaw cycles which cause heaving you can grow a lot of plants in a raised bed (or even overwinter in pots) that you couldn't otherwise. So part of this will depend on what your normal winter snow cover is.

(...continuing...) ATTACHING THE CASTERS: I chose a caster with a rubber-ish wheel and a locking brake mechanism, that swivels. Here's the label (I got these at Home Depot): Place the caster on the bottom side so that the caster plate is lined up with the 2x4 - not with the 1x4 plank that rests on top of the 2x4. (This photo is out of order, but it demonstrates what I mean by lining the caster plate up with the 2x4. This way, when you screw the caster plate into place, the screws will drive into the 2x4, not the air next to the 2x4.) Holding the caster in place, mark where you will drill your pilot holes. Then drill the pilot holes, (Ignore the two holes I drilled there at the bottom; I misaligned the caster initially, and was going to attach it wrong.) then screw the caster plate into place. Now attach the other three casters in the same manner. The next step will be to line the planter with the landscaping fabric. rina: Good idea to look around outside the city area. I did find some after you suggested but I do not know the price yet. It also seems they like bulk pricing of some sort. I do not know yet. Our HD/Lowes do sell cedar boards of several sizes - not much in stock but works for me at times. They are a bit pricier - do not remember the price though - probably 2-3 times a similarly sized pine boards. I think the HD ones are a bit cheaper since they are smooth on one side and rough on the other side. jeanwedding: HD/Lowes lumber are bottom of the line. I select through the pieces to find few of them that are straight and flat. It is a pain to sort through them.
