Moving any one grow MG inside??

Or on a balcony? I have a small arbor I was thinking of putting on inside of Doorframe with pots at bottom for a morning glory walkthru. Any ideas? Doubts? I will be moving from house to apt woth balcony and nowhere to grow and I have worked hard to get some of my MGs. Rare ones even. I will have a full sliding door to light them. Does any one think this work? Thanks

I've started MG's inside for spring before but I don't know if they'll twine around a trellis-the wood might be too thick. I've only trained them on very thin plastic, I'm not sure how they would do.

I bought some iron stakes from the nursery last fall that are decorative, they're shaped like a corkscrew and are 6 feet tall. I'm going to be staking them through a pot and into the ground and growing my MG's up them. I suppose if you had large heavy pots, you could do the same indoors.

The rate at which they grow (and die off from the bottom up) though, you might have a fight on your hands inside. Whatever you decide, good luck with it!

This winter I grew 4 Ipomoea Purpura Morning Glories in an 8 inch pot under compact fluorescent lights inside with no natural light. I pruned heavily until the first flowers appeared then I trained the vines around a one and a half foot tall stake.Still got lots of blooms out of them. Right now they are dead and brown full of drying round seed pods. I will plant the new MG seeds and let the cycle start again.

I've got some of those blue/purple striped ones started, Shibori? I think, something like that..but it also has a really long name starting with 'A' that I can't remember right now lol...no blooms yet this year, though. I had one of the same kind growing inside a couple winters ago that had a couple tiny blooms, but didn't like being inside and died :/ If I didn't have an apartment I'd definitely have more than one kind, though Jennifer

I love this Hosta. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I think it is worth the extra effort when it is mature. Steve you have linked that picture before, and I have been inspired ever since. :) I got mine last year, so this will be its first full year with me. Being the newbie that I am, I ended up potting it in way too big of a pot with half top soil and half potting mix . . . it grew fine in high shade. Go figure. :\ Here he is last year, before I buried him in top soil. This year I tipped it out of the pot as the pips were beginning to emerge and washed all the old soil off. I then slipped it into a more comfortable 2 gallon with real potting soil. It looks stronger than it did last year, so I canÃ¢ÂÂt help but think I am doing something right. I have to agree with everyone though, you need to be patient with this one and maybe pay a little extra care. I think I might end up leaving mine in a pot permanently. When plants live in pots you have a lot more control over what is happening to them. They are also a lot more work than those in the ground. Like Babka said, kill it 3 times before you give up on it. I suggest you to buy at least a 600w metal halide kit with a bulb of the color spectrum of 6500k for you trees and when the trees will begin to bloom you'll need a hps conversion bulb or just a normal hps if it is a swithtable ballast to help bloom and fruit formation.If you don't want your electric bill go up I suggest you to buy a 90w UFO led lights for each tree.The las option is fluorescents bulbs ,but these are weaker in terms of liight power and you'll need a lot of these for your trees ,so these are my suggestion. P.S.I have a mallika mango tree in a pot under a 400w mh 12 hours per day and he's doing wonderful.

Well, the one Ronnie is growing is a real winner,I'm sure we ALL PRAY he has success. :) I have some that don't seem to have names, but that are breathtaking. Then a gal sent me one, which is called "Wisteria Tye Dye" and, is speckeled. Then there's some Ronnie sent me,(he's been very generous), I am anxious to get in the ground, like Blue Silk,Fusino momo,(that s could be a j). :) Anywho, my stand bys like Akasuki no umi, and Shiruki ao, which I call "Love is Blue" There's no way I could let a spring go by without planting these two, and both have varigated leaves. One vine I collected from is white with brownish pink lines exploding from the center, which I call"Chocolate Explosion", really interesting. The Tye Dyes, purple,blue,and pink,and several mix's that have some that look like "Star of India", but the colors are more vivid. The trick for me is to get them in the ground early, even if it's cool, that way they seem to have time to soak in the damp spring weather, and come up at different times, just not plant TOO late. A couple of mine were lost last year because I got them in the ground late, and they didn't set seed just like you mentioned. I'm not one for starting seeds inside very much. Oh, - I have a camera now, but have'ft to figure out how to post pics. Karyn, seems like you have the same problem as I do, SO many, SO little space. "If there's a will , there's a way"!!! :) Fran, Ron has had so many useful ideas, I love the one he gave you, it also works great for Moonvine, which I had trouble getting seeds to before. Now I have a ton, due to his good pointers. Last year I let a lot of my MG seeds come up that had just dropped, and If I liked the vine, I would let it grow, and if I had one that came up that wasn't that special, I would pull it out. Only problem, I have never really met a MG I didn't like. Even the Noah is really neat, but goodness is it invasive! Just to see a MG poking it's little stem out of the ground is so exciting, and you wonder what it's going to look like, that is, if it comes up in MY garden anyway! :) arum

I have grown morning glories inside! They were my inspiration for getting through college. I grew them in my dorm room window. My mother did the same when she was going through school. They are pretty in hanging baskets.

They grow great (if a little less vigorously) inside but have the same requirements as outside (don't like to be repotted, blossom best when neglected a little, etc.). They should do fine if the doorway you mention is around that full sliding door that's going to light them. In a more interior area they'd need some artificial lighting.

My indoor/winter ones grow around a hoop under normal fluorescents and tend to twine back and forth around it several times. They're pretty messy indoors, so it helps to keep them contained on one manageable structure (not the easiest thing to do with morning glories). They seem to have eyes for anything within a few feet that might serve as a support for twining (other plants, especially), and I don't know whether they'd choke the other plants so I keep steering them back to the hoop.

With tendrils free to grope along surrounding walls, etc., they'll be gorgeous, although they won't cooperate with any attempt to keep them out of the way of the door!
