Comments (7)I didn't pay the Menard's design people anything. I suppose you could get your design for free and then just not go back after the cabinets. I did buy my cabinets there. They were More than I planned when I started thinking kitchen but they were Sooooo perfect. ( My original plan was to replace my existing but my carpenter said if I was going to do it I should have it the way I wanted it.) If I wouldn't have started flipping through the door samples I would have gone oak "just like I've always had". I looked there for everything, though. I had a zipper notebook with everything about the kitchen in it. Measurements, inspiration pictures, printed pictures of the exact thing I was looking for, everything. Then while we were discussing the cabinets I had measurements and everything right there with me for the answer. I did buy a lot on eBay and on line but I looked at things in the store. The thing about the Menard's designers was they were familiar with every cabinet size and function of every style. If I wanted 18 inch base they could pull it up on the design software picture we were making and it only took a few seconds. They could turn it, 3-D, top; everything. Quick and painless and I could change my mind 4 times without feeling real guilty. They had some good ideas, too, and I did listen to them. I got a heads up a couple of weeks before they went on sale. I was just waiting for it to be in my time frame. I also got a free sink base and soft close drawers. My cabinets were about 25 feet, top and bottom for under $5,000. The photobucket link will take you to my page. There are three albums there. You probably want "finished kitchen". Comments (94)Every choice has pluses and minuses, in the end you have to choose which plus and which minus matters the most to you and/or which have an easy fix (like using a cutting board under the crockpot; at work we have an extra piece under the big coffeemaker). budget mattered a lot to me (and I hated formica) so, I ended up with a lesser expensive granite and am very happy, no sealing or extra work for the stone I chose. I had formica previously which looked like h#*! from the day I moved in and didn't get better (except that I could use bleach to remove stains) so those of you whose formica looks like new after 30 years must be taking appropriate care -- using cutting boards (mine had little cuts all over) and so forth -- where my previous owners did not. But, I read that formica now is much better quality than what was installed 30 or 40 years ago. I looked at Burled Beach and liked it. It looked a warm sand-ish color on my samples in my house, but I saw a demo kitchen of it at a big box store and it was a warm greenish tone (I still liked it) under their fluorescent lights. You always have to ability to STOP and make changes unless the cabinets are all already made. If he is just now starting it might not be too late -- call him now! PS do you have an IKEA near to you? Most counter materials are less expensive there....See MoreNeeding help choosing coordinating floors, counter top and backsplash
Comments (12)thank you, what did you mean by "I would not take up the charge of the sink"? Do you mean you wouldn't bother replacing? Regarding the flooring....the rest of the house has the old school 3/4" oak flooring so if I change the flooring to hardwood in the kitchen and entryway, I would have to change out all the hardwood in the living room and kitchen. This was my thought process anyway. I did check out the cost and for the flooring I like, it would be a lot of $. To answer your question, the sq footage of the combined entry way and kitchen which is currently tiled, is about 170 sq ft. what did you mean about backsplash? I was thinking black granite counter top and then a simple backsplash and yes I def want a coordinated look. warm, inviting and not choppy and misfitting. thanks again...See MoreNeed help hiding granite line on kitchen counter top.
Comments (25)it's not horrible. but I agree, the rough edge should have been done better to blend w/the other piece. I also think they could have done a better job matching up the pieces. 100% they should have informed you where they were going to cut and how the ends would look against one another. Most reputable fabricators will show the client and have them sign off before they cut, just for this reason. you have a lot going in there from what I can see. a very busy backsplash, red/brown cabinets and a blue/gray wall color? and bright white outlets. you can buy colored outlets/plates that would blend in w/the tile. or get the wood one and paint it yourself to match the tile color. when shown against everything else you have happening in that space, the seaming really isn't that noticeable....See MoreAndrew T Boyne Architect
