Front entry 38" wide single door v. double door? Full wrought iron?
Comments (8)We have iron double doors and they ARE heavy. They are very well balanced though and open and close like "butterrrr". My toddler grandchildren have no problem moving them once they are open. Price these doors before you fall in love with either idea. Our door was reasonable (4K +) but they can run much higher. Your hardware for these doors is not inexpensive either, and if you have the requirements that Renovator spoke of for your area of not being able to leave one side latched- a double may not be worth the security hassles. Our double door is inside a security gated courtyard so we often leave it open in nice weather when kiddos are not around....See Moresingle or dutch double entry door?
Comments (2)Skies the limit once you strip it down to the rough opening. What do you want? You can usually get a single door in there some some smaller sidelites as an option....See MoreSingle front door with sidelights to a double door is it possible
Comments (5)Yes but what size is your overall unit? A double front door really needs to be a 6' wide opening as you should have the main leaf be 36" minimum. Now the opening could be made larger potentially but then you will end up needing to reframe the door opening which may or may not be possible with the limited info you have offered....See More30" Double 6 lite doors. Are (2) 30" doors too small for a front door?
Comments (6)Yes it actually works out very well and IMHO the proportions look better on an old house. We had a big front door and sidelites and replaced with a pair of French doors for light and views. I’ll try to find a pic. See if your existing rough opening is 5’-4” wide, use the entire width for the new pair of doors. You say the door is close to a wall inside, you can make that side the passive door. We added surface mounted head and foot bolts to seal the door closed at the top and bottom since we did not use the manufacturer’s multi point lock hardware. The original wood door rotted and leaked, ruined the floor and subfloor in the door area. The replacement doors never had a problem with water or air intrusion. When we moved large furniture in and out we opened both doors, but that was rare. Just be aware there is a possible building code issue though if this is considered the home’s egress door, depending on how the code official interprets the IRC language about what counts as clear passage. Some interpretations are that an active panel door smaller than 3’ wide is not sufficient to meet 32” wide clearance, and that the passive door can’t be included in the width, some say it can. Usually there is a back or side door that can be the 3’ egress door of the house....See MorePaula Tait
