Calling cat owners - need advice about my new kitty
Comments (28)You are all wonderful - thank you for your responses! This forum always amazes me. Bestyears - thanks for pointing out the hand feeding. I will do that for sure. I think one kitty is good for us with the dog but maybe once he passes, another kitty might be in order. I can see how people adopt mucltiple cats. They are so much easier than dogs. (But I adore my dog) :) Busybee - I did not know that about the purring. I hope she wasn't purring at the shelter because she was stressed although I am sure it is possible. She purrs when she eats and plays so I think that's a happy purr. Aunjen - how kind of you to adopt feral cats! I would want to love on them too. I agree that no matter her disposition, we will love her and it will be a rewarding relationship. Thank you. teacats - I will use all of your suggestions. Chijim - She is doing a lot better with my husband - I think it is going to be fine. I have had him feed her. He has taught her to drink water from the faucet. So, they're bonding. My 16 year old son is the next one who needs to feed her. Kiki - really good information - I am going to get her some treats today and start with the rewards immediately! It makes sense about the hands. She does let me pet her - when she's in the mood. I am really gentle with her and try to avoid sudden movements. I also pick her up when she lets me hoping that she will get used to it. I put her down right away once I sense she's had enough. HIIWTHI - more reassurance - thank you and thank you for the kind words. I'm glad I did too even if the adjustment takes a bit longer. There were beautiful cats at the shelter that had been there for 2 years. That would really be a tough adjustment! Thank you again. You have helped so much! Comments (17)An old country vet taught me how to give a cat a pill over 30 years ago. I've been doing it this way every since--to my cats and other peoples (when they have problems getting the cat to take a pill) and it's never failed. When you pick up the pill, hold it between your thumb and first finger. Run your other fingers under the faucet to wet them. Holding the cat with your other arm wrapped around it to 'clamp' it to your side, use the hand without the pill in it, to open the cat's mouth. Toss the pill as far back as possible, hold the cat's mouth shut and wipe your wet fingers on their nose. They automatically have to swallow at that point, and the pill goes right down. I can do that by myself, but if necessary--and with your hand situation you may find this easier--you can have someone else hold the cat and open it's mouth while you toss in the pill and wipe the nose with water. That's the method the vet taught me. I've actually done it without the water, even. As long as you touch their nose, and they think there's something there, they can't help themselves, they have to lick and swallow. Hope that helps, and I hope the furbaby is soon feeling much better. (bet you don't want to hear this--but antibiotics, either liquid or pill, always upset my cat's tummy. If yours starts vomiting shortly after taking the antibiotic, call the vet and see what other options you may have....See MorePottery Barn Wool Rugs...Opinions, please?
Comments (27)If you see a backing on the rug (as opposed to seeing the weave and pattern on the underside) then it has adhesive. The back of the rug is coated with adhesive and the backing is glued to it. That is what you smell. The latex adhesive deteriorates over time (avoid sunlight, this makes it worse). I read one comment about using an iron for creases - if the rug has an adhesive this will melt the adhesive and cause staining and smells. The first 3 days are worst for new rigs with an adhesive, but VOCs can off-gas for years. Recently, PB has started using a manufacturer that uses "synthetic latex" adhesive to combat this deterioration, and latex allergies. They claim it doesn't break down but I don't have long-term experience to know how it performs. It theoretically should have low VOCs and minimize smell issues. I'm curious if anyone has experience with their rigs made of recycled water bottles. They are more affordable and are surprisingly soft....See MoreNeed a nice tightly woven area rug that cats cannot tear up!
Comments (20)this is just a remark from my vet: "if i didn't de-claw cats, many of my clients would either get rid of their cats or have them euthanized". now, i have a cat and he is not de-clawed and he really is not a huge scratcher/ripper. he has he's posts and cardboard scratchers and his happy with those. so i don't have any issues with furniture being destroyed. but i do understand his point of view, b/c that would happen. i would rather have people keep their cats than have them destroyed b/c of scratching. i don't agree with it, but its better than the alternative, i guess. my bigger issue is having your cat outdoors and killing wildlife. do a little research and see what a huge negative impact domestic cats have on wildlife. cats are meant to be indoors. wildlife do not "know" that they exist and have no natural instincts to be aware of them. even if your cat has a bell on, that does not register with wildlife. what natural predator has a bell on?? its illegal to have your cat outdoors in our neighborhood. if your cat is picked up and u go to the shelter to retrieve it, you are fined for having your cat outside. so please, think about it and keep your cat indoors. if u provide enough toys and stimulation, your cat will be happy, live longer and have less diseases..... in response to the OP,, no, i don't know what kind of rug to recommend, sorry...See MoreUser
