I was going in circles to get to the right state. It said it borders the second state I guessed, and it doesn't, according to the maps I've looked at. And that caused some wrong guesses.

I've been seeing repeating posts for a very long time, and so now I try to avoid long threads, except for ones that I've started and the game thread. I've not been reading the "bear" thread, and I missed the first one about bears.
Agree. Long thread chaos.
Yes, I've noticed repeating comments in long threads too. I'll be reading along and suddenly realize that I've read these comments already. It's strange!
Whenever I see this thread pop up I think someone is asking about No Thank You cards and I try to imagine for what occasion you'd send a No Thank You card, lol.

As you can all see I needed two hints. Even after the first I wasn't sure of the direction. After the second I knew and also knew I was in trouble.:) Although the last four I got quite quickly.
Since I am moving, I am in the process of planning a new garden, and I just came up with some ideas today.
We are going to be in Cathedral City (Palm Springs adjacent), and so the climate here is very different from coastal Los Angeles, where the mean temperature varied less than 10° between summer and winter, and so many things grew all year and only required changes in watering.
In the desert, our winters will be similar to L.A., but the summers will be brutally hot, and so many plants will not survive. However, some plants like the heat, such as the chocolate Habanero chili plants that I used to grow. In L.A., I had to start the seeds in a heated terrarium, but I figured out that I can start seeds outdoors here and can get rid of the terrarium, which I do not have room for here anyway. We have a patch of sandy ground with one palm tree and nothing else that is about 12 or 16 feet square (I think).
Since it is getting close to summer, I am not sure what I can put outside here that would do well, but I think I will try basil first, although I might have to water it twice a day. Until now, I was not here long enough to take care of outdoor plants, but once I am here full time, I will be able to water twice a day, if necessary. It won't take that much water for what I have in mind - much less than what the neighbors use for their front lawn - something I do not have here.
I will have to learn which edible plants are heat tolerant - something I tried to learn when I was in Texas but was not that successful at. I also do not want to try to grow anything that will require huge amounts of water. We can grow dates here, but I will continue to go to date farms to buy those - I won't try that myself.
I think most of my plant growing is going to have to happen in the winter. So far, we have not had a frost since I have been here (2019 - 2024), but a light frost is a possibility, and I will have to take that into consideration when I plant herbs here. I will be planting them in pots, and so I could always move them if there is a chance of frost, or cover them. It pretty much never got below 40° at my house in L.A., and so this was never an issue for me there.
I'm going to try my favorite herbs to start with - parsley, cilantro, chives, dill, and basil and see how those will do this summer, but I do expect them to bolt (except for the basil), but maybe I can get some use out of them before that happens. I think all of those will grow really well for me in the winter, and if I lose some to a rare frost, I can replant them.
I’m so envious of your gardens. I have no room to grow anything other than a few roses. I really miss my citrus trees and my herb garden. Maybe someday, I’ll have the huge built-in grill that I will never use removed and replaced with a raised bed that I could use for an herb garden.
I have planted many pots and urns with annuals and the veggie garden has six tomato plants and four zucchini plants. Our community garden shut down because the company (Ames) is for sale so 12 years of having a large garden plot there is gone. There were 155 plots with a watering system and shed with tools for use. Sad.
If you can swing it, take a vacation and travel somewhere you have never been before. This way you will be in a place that you do not associate with smoking. I think that staying in an environment that you associate with smoking makes it more difficult.
This works for changing any kind of habit.
I love how supportive you all are. I watched tv last night with Myben on my lap. She kept me focused on her so I wasn't thinking about rolling or lighting up.
Tomorrow is Thursday. If there are any cigarettes get rid of them now!! Have your game plan in mind for tomorrow. Good Luck!!
Yes, I’m aware the vanity is not minimalist. However, a powder room is generally where a home can deviate and be a little louder/different than the rest. I like the vanity, hence the reason I created the poll. Wasn’t asking if people liked it or not.
Obviously this was important information for you to relate: "I gravitate towards more minimalistic/scandinavian style." or you wouldn't have bothered to say that. I agree that your choice (it's the same vanity, just slightly different color) will not look as if it belongs in the house, if indeed you are in fact furnishing your house in a minimalistic/scandinavian style. It's nothing to do with whether or not I or anyone else likes it.
Too big. You really need 60 inches island to table and in a perfect world, aisle clearances range to island and d.w.. to island are 48"
You have a 12' wall and a 13 ' wall......meaning the kitchen is not large enough as planned for ANY island, and probably better with a peninsula.
Before anything else?
Post a scaled drawing of all the open space, all three areas. Every wall, window, door with feet and inches. Upload as a jpeg.
When trying to click on photos to enlarge them, I accidentially "voted" for #2, when all I was trying to do was to enlarge the photo. Therefore, you could remove that vote from me and give it to #4 instead.
why not just match the back,
the same way as the front?
Do the roofline w/the onyx, every thing else in the iron mountain. (check out Wrought Iron as well)
This one is actually Iron Ore, another nice choice
similar to yours. notice the trim around the windows and the garage doors
https://www.brickandbatten.com/review-iron-mountain-benjamin-moore/
Thank you Beth H.! I appreciate your thoughts on matching back to front, which is what option 1 on the poll was (at least my quick drawing was to match front). I do think we will just have roofline in Onyx and rest (body/window trim etc). in Iron Mountain (or Wrought Iron).
I like wrought iron but feel like it has more blue undertones and as it's a little darker maybe won't have enough color variation from the Onyx. I just wanted more black on the back to feature the big windows a bit more and make it more modern rustic than just rustic looking. Maybe once the whole house is repainted and landscaped I won't feel the need to change as much as I currently do. It's probably easier to add the black to that seciton of the house later if I don't feel it has enough impact than paint it black and then find it looks choppy or disconnected.
When the position of the can is critical, I'd recommend remodel cans even for new construction. Run wire, drywall, drill exactly where they go, fish for wire, and connect. I've seen too many cans installed halfway over a full-height pantry cabinet and not centered over the doors.
I remember cicadas in Texas, but I must have seen them only once, since I did not stay there that long. We do not have them in California.
We don’t have them in the PNW but I am curious if anything eats them? If so, does that mean a boom in population of their well fed predators?
A lot of stuff eats them. Land, air, and water critters. Anything that normally will eat a bug will get their fill, and even some things that don't normally eat as much will still glut out. Not necessarily a boom in populations, but for sure well fed this time.
The noted natural predator is a cicada killer wasp. It kills to bring home food for the babies. However, it emerges later in summer and will miss the big feed coming up soon. But people will still likely kill this beneficial wasp anyway once they do emerge.
I have a very large elliptical machine
Have you tried Facebook Marketplace or Buynothing? This notwithstanding:
What a lovely house! I just know that house is tickled pink to get a brand new young family to take care of.
Jsk, Iwas so lucky that the buyers kept the baby grand piano. It would have broken my heart to have it dumped.
The brand Yves Saint Laurent was established in 1962, and so the shirt cannot be older than that. It could have been manufactured for sale in a country other than the USA, but then it still could not have been sold here legally.
Did your mother buy black market clothing, even if innocently? This could easily happen in cities like New York or Chicago.
Sorry, busy day today. The YSL is not aithentic, but it’s also not trying to be. What I mean is it’s not a fake label either. In the 80’s, designers licensed their names and the items were produced by different makers. Labels for these goods might read Yves Saint Laurent Variations. This is not a licensed product either.
Thanks to all for the comments and help. Methinks YSL is on it's way to my favourite NFP thrift store for them to earn the money. I asked my daughter to help me sell the Chanel online.
Our recycling bin has drainage holes in the bottom, which is another good reason not to have any food residue in there - not just flies - how about ants and roaches?
I've been known to fish out stuff that wasn't clean enough and rewashing.
In all honesty, tho, recycling seems to be one of the most misunderstood municipal duties around here. People will put garbage out in their recycling bins and then presumably wonder why it's still sitting there after the trucks go by 🙄
I'm all in favor of this responsibility being placed squarely on producers, rather than confused consumers.
I have an Etekcity EB9380H, which I like because it is non-smart - I would not get the newer version that is available. It uses AAA batteries, which are easy to replace - unlike the disc batteries on some that I've had before.
I had a Taylor scale, and it used the disc batteries, which I do not like, and if I did not stand completely still on it, it would register a bunch of different weights and never decide on one. The Etekcity does not have that problem, and all it does is give the weight, which is all I want it to do.
FOAS, This one uses a CR2032 battery, but I see that newer ones use AAA batteries.
I had a Weight Watchers scale before that, and I did not like it either, as it could not decide on what weight to display.
The Etekcity takes a few seconds to decide what weight to display, but it makes its decision reasonably quickly. I did quite a bit of research before I decided on that brand.
Funny story, FOAS.
I bought a Taylor scale for about $25. I was concerned about the exploding glass, so found one that looked like a barn door — the top is some sort of vinyl.
The one I had before was a known brand, HEALTH****. It was heavy, solid and sure. Unfortunately I lost my balance and ended up coming down on it. The plastic lens broke and the needle or something is broken.
I will have to be careful of this one. Too bad it did not come with a ”126.4” sticker.
I really like that glass block too - I've always liked glass block.
All that white paint isn't the best tho, IMO. I think I'd like a little more color - and a warmer white.
The glass blocks are nice, especially if your view is of the trash cans. Those cabs look like the originals in my kitchen. It had those vents under the sink, too.
Yes, a little too white.
KW, the frosted glass is angled, between the backsplash and the upper cabinets. I have seen that pegboard on the uppers in photos of that style of kitchen. Looks cool, but i can imagine dust getting in, especially the dishes that aren’t used and washed that often. Or just dust settling within the peg holes. My louvered doors collect enough as it is.
What were they thinking? Agree, it is one hot mess. What do I like? The pink tile and I would keep it and gut the rest.
This was yesterday's Too Good To Go package -- $6.
Re okra sliminess. My gumbo recipe calls for separately sauteeing the sliced okra in a tiny bit of oil ”until it is no longer ropy.” Yes, it will get slimy or ropy for a while, but then the slime cooks out of it.
If you are getting fried okra that is slimy, it hasn’t been cooked long enough. I grew up eating tons of okra. My 2 least favorite ways were boiled and buttered or stewed with onions and tomatoes. Both of those were slimy. My most favorite was sliced crosswise, breaded with cornmeal, and fried until almost but not quite burnt. I can still eat my weight in it fried like that!
