Ground cover ideas between Green Giants

I planted 6 green giants 12 feet on center in full sun on west side of fence two or so years ago and initially mulched rings around them, it became annoying to cut around each one and the grass was terrible anyway so i decided to make a large mulch strip connecting them all. this also made it easier to deer net the whole strip. its not a huge issue but weeds are proliferating and i also imagine a day when i have to remove the netting and the deer graze the bottom 5 feet so a ground cover could be a long term thing as well. does anyone have any ideas of groundcovers i could mass over time? id like to avoid things like liriope, i have that elsewhere but its contained by hardscaping. thanks

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) HI garden gal, I havent posted here in two years since i asked this forum about what to do for privacy in this spot pictured here, you were one to offer good practical advice and not push me into some elaborate (expensive) staggered rows of various evergreen and decidious shrubs and trees when i just wanted quick pool area privacy. Here is the result after not even 2 full growing seasons (planted maybe june 2022 and a drought in August 2022) these GGs were the $30 maybe 2.5-3 ft smallest available ones at home depot and now multiple are over 8 feet. Anyway, i just wanted to say thank you as i went through that old post and read your replies and frequently see your thoughtful replies to others when i google ”(my landscape question) Houzz”

Anticipating bare legs on the arbs, I’d plant deer-proof shrubs that will reach 5 feet. If they are all the same the wffect will be a deep groundcover.

There are pavers used for technical reasons (stormwater treatment/retention) that have gaps between them, but they are only about a 1/4 inch (search uni-ecostone)...also, you could use open grid pavers that look about like concrete fence lattice. That might provide enough room to grow....some grass?

green and maroon single leave ground cover

We have Trout Lilies, which have a green leaf with maroon spots. They can be quite thick, and do cover the ground on parts of the wooded area behind our house. They are blooming now, along with some other flowering plants. The leaves tend to disappear later in the season. I was checking in this forum because my Trout Lilies are yellow with darker maroon striping on the outside of flowers. Yesterday I was looking along the fenceline and found a bunch of white flowers that look like Trout Lilies, except I have never seen white ones. Leaves look the same, single green with maroon spots. The difference is we usually have horses in the pasture here, but don't this spring. Horses congregate in that tree corner for shade, trample anything that grows. Reading other posts, it sounds like Trout Lilies come in white. Is this correct? All the books, catalogs I have seen, show them and describe them as yellow. My flower area is wooded with leaf fall piling up each year. Most of the trees are Oak, some Honeysuckle and Hickory. The field outside the woods is soil testing about 6.4 on the PH. Not really acidic. Dirt is moist most of the time since this is the lower area than field, lots of clay in the dirt.

I know it's late, but if you haven't done this yet, I would suggest considering planting along the edges and let it spill onto the path rather than in the path. The plants are a trip/slip hazard, and snow removal on a path that has plants in it will be a pain and may kill the plants. With plants spilling onto the path, in the fall, trim them back to the edge and then snow removal won't be an issue. Perhaps it's my age, but I am becoming more careful about trip hazards since I am often carrying something that prevents me seeing where my feet are.

Landscape roses are considered groundcover roses. They are low growing shrub roses (typically not exceeding 3') that spread much wider than they grow tall. Drift, Knock Out, Flower Carpet are all readily available landscape groundcover-type roses. It is not a defined category, but the roses are bred specifically for these attributes. They also tend to be very free flowering and low maintenance compared to other rose types. The issue with most groundcover clematis is that they behave exactly as do their vining cousins....except they don't vine :-) So for the most part, they are not tidy little clumping things but large rambling plants that can easily grow several meters a season. Combining the two - the wide, sprawling landscape roses and the long, rambling clematis - may not be as simple as it sounds without very careful cultivar selections.

@kitasei2 its a good thought thank you, i could imagine a juniper bush as it doesnt require yearly pruning. its tough as my neighbors property is close to the edge of this bed and id just be hesitant to entrench myself with shrubs there as well at this moment. ill have to look up some pictures or maybe someone else doing it. thank you
