Help with Color of Paint and Windows on Exterior of Ranch Home
Comments (20)Agree on shutters, no shutters. If they can't be architecturally correct or at least appear to close and angle properly, no shutters. We do virtual exterior designs and recently did a more classic take on that same style house. We added trim boards and beefed up molding on windows. I know you are leaning modern farmhouse, but thought I would share for fun because house is SO SIMILAR. We also added some brick to bottom of columns and a great stained, wood door. This classic look will never go out of style :). We gave the client two color options....See More50s Ranch-style Home Exterior Update and Curb Appeal Help
Comments (5)Thank you, both! I certainly understand and appreciate where you are coming from. Waiting has been our mindset for a long time. We have lived here for ten years mostly focusing on saving, doing infrastructure projects, and tackling smaller landscaping projects (it is on 3+ acres and much has been done in the back). It doesn't look like much now (spring has not really arrived where we are) but the beds will be full with plants soon as it warms and we always plant annuals, planters, pots, and baskets. The greenery always does wonders to make it look more welcoming! We have gone back and forth about waiting. Unfortunately, the paint has been slowly running off the house when it rains since we moved in, some places are down to bare aluminum, and the deck has not been done for three years and is in need of painting anyway. We feel like we need to address it now in order to maintain the house and keep from opening ourselves up to bigger issues down the line. Aside from the painting (which we plan to do ourselves) the other projects should not be impacted when we renovate (patio furniture, trellis, steps, etc.). A good chunk of the funds will go toward furniture and based on our budget estimates. The paint and associated supplies will represent a much smaller portion....See MoreExterior remodel HELP on 1980 Ranch style home in Oklahoma
Comments (10)Not black--that's too dark and too harsh. When I look at this house, the first thing I see is the garage doors and then the light colored siding between the windows. The front door is invisible. I would pick a medium dark color from the bricks (or possibly a warm charcoal gray if you want a more "modern" color), and paint the garage doors, siding, and trim with that. Then I would pick a light, bright color for the front door. Then I would invest in landscaping, which you desperately need....See MoreNeed exterior design help for this 1960s split level ranch
Comments (5)Interesting - I like your theory about someone homesick for New Orleans LOL. As mentioned above, porch cant really be removed without leaving scars - and an overhang much deeper than the rest of the house, which would look funny. Can the balcony be used, does it make sense to open up a room to it? Part of its oddness is that its obvious that there is no door and cant be used. Whats going on under the porch, behind the hedge? Some kind of patio? You could remove the hedge, expand that and make it into useable attractive outdoor living space - framed in a border of flowering fragrant shrubs, 1 or 2 well placed ornamental trees (ie short, placed toward the side of the house), intermixed with perennials/bulbs. You could leave a few of the evergreens - its just the solid wall of them that is so unappealing. What are the rooms on the lower level - would any of those benefit by opening up to a patio? .... or maybe it could be an actual courtyard and by that I mean a professionally designed walled space which fits architecturally with your house.... not an ugly cheap privacy fence from Menards! But then that gets to be expensive too - probably more than just removing the darn thing! Otherwise, maybe just swap out the frilly iron work for something simpler/more linear, with strong horizontal lines as is fitting for this style/era. Also changing all the white to something less high contrast - would help de-emphasize it....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
