could scions still be viable on dead rootstock
Comments (10)Burnt Ridge told me they used at least two different species of rootstock for their persimmons -- mine was a Hana Fuyu -- and they didn't keep record of the rootstock with their inventory. I think they said they used D.v. and D.k., but I can't remember precisely which two they said they used. Another possibility is that I just didn't scratch deep enough on the rootstock. I could very well be wrong about what's going on, but I do know that a scratch test up in the tree looks very good and that there's no sign of any growth yet, even though my other kakis broke dormancy a couple weeks ago and are leafing out now. I did hedge my bet by cutting some scions (although it's not much of a hedge with my kaki grafting success rate to date.)...See MoreDiscovered old compost - Still viable?
Comments (4)> send it to me for proper disposal I'll remember you if I ever have an excess again. :) I've been to the house (and absconded with the bin) but left most of the compost which was very nice, dark brown, quite dry with only twigs in it. I spread it over their lawn and bushes. I need compost, but one look and believe me, they needed it more. :) I did take the top foot, which was almost completely unconverted. I'm surprised that any leaves would be in such a whole state after being left for so long, but the bin *was* quite dry under that deck. So, I now have a bin (a Garden Gourmet, 80.00 on Amazon - score!) and maybe my neighbors will stop eyeing me funny with my big pile of brown next to their professionally landscaped (and boring) lawns. Thanks for the answers, anyway....See MoreThis Black Walnut Stump Still Viable?

Comments (1)Most likely, it will be fine. As long as the eyes and neck are not damaged, the fat part of the tuber can handle a little love/abuse. But here is the ultimate test. Leave it indoors or outdoors, even in a plastic baggy and watch for an eye to grow. Once you see either an eye bud out or a shoot appear, it will be fine. Eyes are appearing now in California so you should likely see something within weeks. If there is no eye, it won't bloom anyway and wouldn't be the dog's fault. If it does sprout and then bloom, you will have teeth-holes in the flowers as a memento. (just kidding)...See MoreLisa Adams
