Anyone here near U. of Wisconsin

My GD is attending a big youth leadership conference there and I cannot find any information or pictures from it. Our so call papers here don't give us anything but flooding, pictures of flooding and more.

I went on line but still could not find out anything.

She is 17 and flew by herself from No. Cal to WI., but she has flown before.

Is this a 4-H conference? Go to Google and type in "Madison, WI Youth Conference June 20" and a PDF of a tentative schedule shows up.

Which UW? There is UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green bay, and UW-Whitewater besides UW-Madison. I probably forgot one in there, lol.

Idaho, I have made new planting beds by simply covering the grass with newspaper, covering the newspaper with shredded leaves, and waiting several weeks before planting in that area. No tilling was required to make a very nice and easily worked planting bed. The soil bacteria digested the grass and the earthworms did the "tilling" of at soil for me. Soil does not absorb organic matter. The OM is a part of the soil although just where if fits into the soils texture depends on which soil, sand or clay, you have. Organic matter is digested by the soil bacteria and becomes nutrients for plants as well as the Soil Food Web and is the only part of your soil that you need to replace, frequently. That part, the replacing, is why many people do not, it is too expensive to buy OM, but they throw a way good organic matter from their garden all the time. Tilling is destructive to soil structure and is unnecessary.

keep in mind that 99.9% of banana breeding projects were done for banana producing regions of the tropics, developing a cold hardy variety has never been a cold. Faster production times are, but they aren't looking at our shorter seasons. This doesn't mean that there aren't some out there already that will work, or that they can't be developed. Hybrids that fit the bill will need to come from collectors though. But given what people have done "by themselves" in so many other plant families it certainly is possible. JoeReal the permit info is linked below. You owe me a senorita for the link :-). The US now requires a phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin. If you are going anytime soon, it would be wise to get some contacts to find out where you need to go to get one and what there process is. Some countries are very easy, some are a pain... some are now impossible. Just don't try to get your phyto on the last day or something, as thats one of those "expect delays" type situations. With just a few corms (or TC as you mentioned before) you shouldn't have a problem. With plant material, cutting off all roots helps, and ABSOLUTELY no soil/dirt. you'll get a massive package of import rules on a ton of plants you aren't interested in, as well as your permit. When applying, specify all plant material and all ports of entry to avoid future hassles if you want to import something else. Tim Chapman Here is a link that might be useful: permit info page

I live in Wisconsin. I'm not sure that retirees are leaving WI for political reasons or not. I would think it would be due to the real estate taxes and state income taxes. We pay a lot in real estate taxes. I know of many people that have come here from Minnesota complaining about their property taxes but yet when they get their WI taxes, they are very surprised. It seems that WI is far higher. From what I know about MN, they are high also. As for the governor, we are in one of those states where the governor can change any part of a bill that comes his way AND change numbers any which way he wants. The current governor has done this on more than one occasion. But in all fairness to him, the governors from as far back as I remember have done that. In my opinion, that is the real problem with my great state!

Yep, there's one more: UWM (University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee) I have a degree from there.

If she is going to Madison, parking is the biggest problem. The Unversity campus, State Capitol, Madison Library, Camp Randal Stadium, and student housing all elbow each other for space. There's no space left over for parking. Lake Mendota is a plus, however.

At this time, the state legislature is in one of its biggest battles over revamping the state budget under the new governor, Scott Walker. He's a Replubican who wrested control from the Democrats this election. Very large protest demostrations have occured in the Capitol building and gorunds - had the town tied in knots for a week. A new demonstration is afoot and the Capitol building is full of police. Recall elections have been logged in for 9 members. For the recall election, the Republicans are running fake canidates as Democrats who will turncoat back to Replubican if elected. This is politics at the verge of fist fights. Stnad back and watch the show.

University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha, WI, from which my granddaughter graduated. Her sister is considering UW/Green Bay.
