Good heirloom/OP replacements for Big Beef & Brandy Boy?
Comments (10)I'd love to see an open pollinated tomato that truly matches the characteristics and value of Big Beef. I'm betting there isn't one. Big Beef is pretty special with regard to production, disease resistance and flavor. If anyone really finds a head-to-head replacement, please holler out. None I've seen mentioned meet the challenge, in my opinion. An open pollinated replacement for Brandy Boy will be easier, I imagine. According to many reports right here at GW and other tomato haunts, Cowlicks Brandywine is a contender. I've not grown it yet. Anyone else who has maybe can chime in....See MoreSupersonic vs Big Boy vs Big Beef
Comments (11)I've grown all three. You asked for taste as the basis of comparison, and of the three choices, I vote strongly for Big Beef. I now grow it every year as the hybrid beefsteak of choice, because it is realiable, productive, and most of all, tastes very good. I also grow a couple of Better Boys (rather than Big Boy), I think they are similar to Big Boy, but more disease resistant. The Better Boys are more productive, and good, but not nearly as good tasting as Big Beef, but I grow them because I know I will get a lot of good looking, better than average tomatoes, whatever the weather or pest and disease situation. Supersonic is a popular tomato in the Northeast, where I live. I don't think it is better than Big Beef, and I've given it up to make room for more heirlooms, but there is nothing wrong with it....See MoreMy Container Tomatoes - Big Boy and Big Beef
Comments (6)I don't think a Florida Weave will work on container plants, do you? I've looked at all the photos in the link that you provided and all those plants appear to be grown in the ground. I've learned my lesson regarding a single stake, not sure what I was thinking, actually; I believe that I didn't think my plants would end up making it as far as they have. I usually don't have very good luck with tomatoes grown in containers. The fact that they appear to be growing so well and look healthy is a total surprise to me, especially due to one of the containers have two (Big Beef) plants in it. If there is a way to use a Florida weave for a container plant, will you let me know, I would really appreciate it. These containers are getting very heavy and I'd hate to loose the plants now. Thanks for your reply. Linda...See MoreBurpee Big Boy Not So Big
Comments (2)Why not grow the "Big Boy"? I tried it and was very disappointed. The plant was bigger, but the tomatoes were smaller, orange, did not taste as good, and did not look at all like the pictures Burpee showed on their web site. I am trying it again this year, but never will again if it is like last year's crop. ****** The variety F1 Big Boy is RED, not orange. Did you get your seeds from Burpee? It was bred by Dr. Oved Schifriss when he was at Burpee back in the 40's and is still very popular today/ sramm, the Big in the variety name for Big Boy doesn't indicate that the fruits will be BIG, any more so than the Giant in Giant Belgium or the Jumbo in Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red , and on and on. ( smile) Take a look at the thread here on the first page having to do with HUGE tomatoes and see what varieties are mentioned. But three hours of sun each day is not really enough to get decent tomatoes. I do hope you can find a spot that gets the minimum 6-8 hrs/day that are necessary for good growth and fruits.
