Nailing down hardwood flooring, which nails?
Comments (14)Thanks for your suggestions. I noticed the difference between the summer and winter with the floor. Its ashame as they are very nice looking. My wife and I are just fed up as we cant even go in the babies room without waking him up from the noise. YES, its that bad. We put a little rug in his room to try to damper the sound, but only helped a little. Floorguy, I tried with the screws underneath (probably about 100 of them or so) but didn't help. If I recall correctly, I used 1 1/2 inch screws. Maybe they weren't long enough? My arm was ready to fall off from holding the screw gun in an upwards position! I did try putting some shims where I saw that the sub floor was loose, but overall, the sub floor is pretty flat against the joists. As the contractors said, they basically didn't use any any nails when they were installed. If I look underneath them from the basement, I would probably count maybe 50 nails sticking out from the sub floor for the entire 1st floor. I don't know...... :-/ If you can remember the screw names, PLEASE let me know! :-) Any other suggestions or advice is appreciated. Comments (7)The only probem with installing a permanent hanger into the tile would be that if you changed the size of your decorative piece, it would no longer be height centered in the right spot. The only way to solve that would be to have a very decorative picture hook (or old fashioned picture rail molding) placed high from which you could use decorative ribbon, string, or something else to suspend the decor piece at the right height. I you somehow incorporated a stone picture rail molding at the top of the splash, and it worked as a functional part of the design of your backsplash, you could then use a clear hook and fishing line to suspend your decorative piece....See MoreJoist Hanger Screws
Comments (2)You are using the double shear joist hangers? If so ... "With 2x carrying members, use 10d x 1 1/2" nails into the header and 10d commons into the joist, reduce the load to 0.64 of the table value." The 3" nails can go in diagonally without popping out of the back of your 2x ledger. Comments (31)Thanks all. The caddy is too wide for the window sill, however, I do like the table idea along with a runner. I have no idea whether or not the pots have drainage holes. As for our cabinets, we purchased them from a custom cabinetry place, and the paint is their stock antique white, glazed with a warm, deep brown. I don't know the actual colors. I was worried I might not like them because they're not the really bright white, but I shouldn't have concerned myself, as I just love them now. They're so warm and inviting to look at.
