Ben, There has to be a worse place than in Pittsburgh to grow roses. 😁 I never yet had such a,severe attack of powdery mildew hit my roses as this spring. I'm,'arsenaled,' with Bayer fungicide, Copper, and Immunox. The very disease resistant roses, aka. Knock Out types, particularly the,Drifts, are very PM susceptible here. Go Figure.

Definitely best to do regular maintenance. Of course, keep in mind the above advice is for all, including those that garden outside. Indoors has advantages and disadvantages. It's easy to accidentally bring in bugs from the outside. The problem with indoor gardening and bugs is that there are not as many natural predators (spiders always seem to find a way, though) killing off the bugs you accidentally and unknowingly bring in. Hence the need for that regular maintenance. Without natural checks in place, bugs can breed pretty darn fast. Fortunately, they are usually pretty easy to spot - or at least the clues are. With proper care, you certainly reduce the risk of infestation, but it is very easy to miss something and most people don't shower and change their clothes before entering a grow area unless their business depends on it. Spider mites are one of the major problems indoors. You can use neem on those, too. Mike, are you for real or is this a spam log on? Just curious since the name is so new and the link is not to anything pertaining to the thread. Hate to accuse someone of spamming if they are just linking to a site they find helpful, but man this forum gets a lot spam.

OK, correction; the apples on the branch are NOT King David, but Lady Williams (that's what happens when the Belgian Fence makes tracing the branch to the tag difficult). The King David in the hand are indeed runts, but excellent-tasting runts. I picked the Lady Williams today, also very nice, very marketable, but nothing close to King David. KD is still very firm when ripe, but in a pleasant sort of way, very sweet, with a distinctly winey taste, hints of Welch's grape juice, but also very spicy, appley, sweet-tart, matching the color. KD doesn't keep nearly like Arkansas Black unfortunately, but Lady Williams is reported to keep well and improve in ordinary storage, a plus where there is no refrigeration.

Unfortunately, a shorter ~30 ft tree doesn't mean it won't fall or break from catching more wind like a larger tree, it's just less of a problem if it does, and thus hopefully something new gets put in its place, old roots removed and all. can see the stem of this ~30 ft blue spruce? snap and break, unfortunately most evergreens which I want are softwoods https://youtu.be/pBkPichBlt8?t=838 this shows how small and weakly rooted (in certain but likely many soils) the root system of a large seemingly strong healthy tree can actually be, especially when ground is saturated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMwCThoK43k someone mentioned a lot of trees won't just reach a certain height and stop growing even if it's commonly noted as the max height. I've been convinced for years that the blackspot capital of the planet is somewhere around Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. It's also a bad place for bugs, but not at all cold.

To a certain extent, bugs and cold are mutually exclusive.

Well, Nebraska is second only to South Dakota for having the greatest temperature extremes annually - hottest hots to coldest colds sometimes in the same week. It's not unusual in spring or fall to get temperature swings of 60 degrees+ (F) within 24 hours. We get well below zero F in the winter for extended periods and well above 100F in the summer for extended periods, both of which are miserable and not good rose growing times. We don't have reliable snow cover so the winter temperature swings can be more devastating than in places like Colorado. We also just had a bad round of tornadoes in my region that adds to the "fun".

As far as bugs, we have bad Japanese beetles which trump other bug threats for roses as far as I'm concerned. True we don't have chiggers, scorpions, or fire ants, but those are gardener hazards, not rose hazards. Not a ton of thrips but some, and plenty of botyris blight. Plenty of blackspot without spraying - not as much blackspot as DC - but we have pretty bad drought most years which cancels out the benefit.

I am testament to how much RRD we can have, and we lost our local rose garden entirely from RRD a year ago too. The only disease that is uncommon here is rust, but a few roses get it. Not all that much mildew but some roses have it as an epidemic. Balling is common in some roses too even though we're dry most of the time (did I mention weather swings to extremes?) I just think of Clotilde Soupert as a round bloom since it's never otherwise for me.

I am not claiming the worst climate, since folks in zone 3 and 4 can't grow most roses and I can, but I wish to be submitted in the consideration for the award.

FL is one of the states with high fungal disease & insect pressure due to high humidity almost all year long . we don't have cold but summer temps can be around 100F daily and roses either stop blooming or fry .
