White Kitchen Cabinet Paint Brand

Hello, we are repainting our white kitchen cabinets. Our painter recommended Valspar Oil-enriched Furniture and Cabinet Enamel paint. This sounds good but I keep seeing great reviews for the Sherwin Williams Urethane Trim Enamel. Does anyone have a preference? I know the cost of the Sherwin Williams is much more, but for the price of the job it seems worth it for the best paint. Or are they so similar that I may as well save the money?

Utter crapola. Find an actual cabinet finisher. One who uses Renner, Centurion, Milesi, ICA, etc.

Hmm…I hadn’t heard of those brands! Unfortunately, I need something soon and don’t have time to order. I did some research and will definitely look into those brands for our next project. Thank you!

I love BM Simply White. I'm using it now on my exterior trim and will use it on all my interior trim as well. It's a nice, bright warm white. Regarding the sheen, BM paints (IMHO) seem to be shinier than other paints I've used. The "low luster" exterior that I'm using now actually has quite a bit of luster! I used the exterior "soft gloss/satin" on my front door and it actually looks more like a semi-gloss to me ... it's quite shiny. Personally, I would not want semi-gloss on my cabinets and would want something less shiny and reflective. While I might go with the painter's suggestion regarding the brand of paint to use (maybe he has better results with one over the other), I would want to choose the finish myself after looking at the different sheen levels on actual wood. samples. They had those at my BM dealer and they actually painted a couple of wood samples for me to bring home.

I'm painting my cabinets white right now, and had a hard time choosing the white. Funny how you can stand there staring at four white paint chips taped up to your cabinets and go nuts trying to decide which one looks best! I almost went with Simply White but ended up choosing White Dove. I went with Benjamin Moore Advance in satin. The people at the store recommended either Cabinet Coat or Advance for kitchen cabinets. I'm not familiar with SW Pro. But if you use BM paint, the satin might have enough of a shine for you. I started with satin thinking I might switch to semi-gloss, but the satin is really nice and has much more shine then I expected. I would use satin for the cabinets and semi-gloss or even gloss for the trim. But I like shiny trim! Good luck! I should actually be painting my cabinets right now!

If you have a layout and size plan you can get an estimate from Chad at cabinetmakerschoice.com. I do not think you will be able to get both inset and white painted in the $8,000 to $10,000 range but you could possibly get beautiful all wood inset cabinetry in their higher-end line (craftsman) with blum hardware and paint the cabinets yourself. This all depends of course on the size of your kitchen & door pick. Perhaps you could do inset on the top and full overlay on the bottom with same door style? I just ordered my cabinets from the above place; I had been looking at mid priced cabinets like Medallion and SchulerÂs (sp?) from Lowes. I am spending a little bit over half of what the other estimates came in at which is a huge savings. We ordered our all wood cabinets (other cabs were not all wood) with the wall cabÂs painted maple and the base cabinets Cherry with stain plus a glaze and also have an extra line of 18" wall cabinets stacked above the 36" wall cabÂs, pot drawers w/3/4 thick bottoms, trim, light rails moldings, pull out spice cabs ectÂ total 19 cabinets but two are without doors for display. With shipping we came in at a smidge over 8 grand and that included some odd sizes we needed. My cabinets are not inset though, they are full overlay and my kitchen is not that big.

“Refinishing” is more expensive than replacing. Repainting with cabinet conversion varnish averages 7-9K for an average sized kitchen, and is incredible difficult and smelly in an occupied home. I’d advise adjusting the other colors in the room to go with them instead of fighting them, and keep them as is.

Our painter used SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in a Satin finish on my new custom cabinets. It has been one year already since we remodeled the kitchen. The paint is fantastic! It washes up so well and it doesn't chip. I'm very happy with it. All my trim and doors are painted with it also. It is a water based urethane not oil like the Valspar. SW Proclassic Alkyd paint is a little cheaper than the Emerald and it is a very good paint also. Good Luck!

I have used the Valspar, and its about 7 yrs later, and it still perfect. However, your finished job, is only going to be as good, as the prep you do before you use the paint. It takes a lot of prep, and it can take quite a while to do all that prep. No short cuts, when you paint cabinets.

Its all about the prep as mentioned above. If the prep doesn't take 4-5 times the length of time to pain you have done not prepped properly. The best paint in the world will fall off in short order without the proper prep.
