...in which we have three contestants who will vie for the shadiest position in the garden. Today our three lovely contestants are:

Uvularia

Mukdenia

Shredded Umbrella Plant

I vote for Uvularia. I have had Mukdenia in a quite shady location, for years, and it has never amounted to much. Suppose I should re-locate it to see if there might be an improvement. I have no idea about the umbrella plant, as I don't grow it...

I have two species of shredded umbrella plant, this being my favorite. I am far north and have it grown in a good deal of sun.

Hey Sherry My roses are much younger than yours and most are in 1 gal. pots. The potted ones are starting to bloom: Madame Schwartz, Archduke Charles and Duchesse de Brabant are blooming and several other are in bud. Blooming in the ground are: Sawyer Plot Tea and LaMarne. Mrs. B.R.Cant has bloomed most of the winter one bloom at a time. Belinda's Dream and Carnation, my 1-2 year oldsters have also bloomed all winter, many blooms at a time. I am several hours south of you and had just a brush with 32 degrees a couple of times. Hauled every pot into the shed several times along with orchids into the house. Apparently this is the coldest winter in 30 years here (we just moved here last year) Wouldn't ya know :-) Hope we get a nice spring season before the brutal heat returns. Denise

Trailrunner - I missed your previous post - the owner of the business owns the entire property that has both the business and the stone cottage on it. Our plan is that we first buy the business, then buy DH's Grandmother's house, not change our lifestyle and then purchase the entire property that the business is located on. I know that it sounds so ridiculously old fashioned, but I really want to be able to give our children the option of giving them a leg up on housing should they decide that any of them may want to stay in the immediate area of us. I believe in long term goals and in the end we could be able to give each one of our children that option if we play our cards right. As for that chandie - she is still on the office floor. I'm rolling on the DR right now and hanging stuff back up on th ewalls in the freshly painted office. I just swatched BM Ashwood on the bedroom walls because as soon as the DR is done I'm off to the MBR and DD's room upstairs!

Did you look at BM historical colors? Have you looked in your closet for colors that you feel good about and get compliments when you wear them? Another direction would be to just work with lighter and darker variations of the gray you're already happy with. What other shades are on that color strip card? Most decorating projects end with the paint selection because it can be custom blended to work with your fabrics and textiles which are set in stone. Best way to test colors in a room is to paint a large square of each color you're considering in the center of a big white poster boards. That way you can move each color from wall to wall to see how they change with the different lighting effects including rainy days, sunny days, night, with your lighting, etc.

Thank you, Steve. I'm trying to compensate for the fact I'm not turning them around during the winter by really surrounding them with light. I'm really hoping the reflection of the lights in the window helps the window side as well.

It's been years since I've grown Mukdenia but I seem to recall a bit of sun encourages better, redder foliage, so maybe not that one.

I will vote for uvularia, as it’s the native plant and worthy of extra live for that reason (though I actually have all three!)

Thanks so much, guys! Uvularia it is! I bought all three plants and I'm doing that thing where I'm walking around trying to find the right spots. Now that I know shredded umbrella plant and mukdenia can take more sun, that opens up more options! Thanks, again!

Violetsnapdragon....getting all three seems like a great decision. I don't want to throw cold water on the Uvularia choice, but the reason I didn't recommend it was that I added 3 plants to my garden years ago and they never bloomed. I still see one come up every spring but just foliage. And they were not really in deep shade, but did get a little sun in the late afternoon. I have no idea what it is about my garden they haven't liked, but maybe some of those gardeners who have had success wtih it, could explain what conditions they are growing in.
