Have you condsiderated grinding the pill and mixing the ground pill with wet food?

I used to use these - so much easier!

I’ve never had to pill two cats four times a day! Some cats are so psychic they know when you are thinking that you might pill them sometime in the next four hours, so they disappear like magic. For those, I carried the pill in my pocket until I could catch them unawares. Later, I kept the pills for the day in a wee mise-en-place type bowl, so they were always available. We got to be pretty quick at delivery so the cat could get back to whatever it ws they were doing.

The best, though, was a medication that could be delivered as a transdermal, on the inner side of the ear flap.

Cat did not care for Greenies.

I always hold them by the scruff, hold the pill in my other hand, pinching between thumb and forefinger, scoop the pill through some butter, then use the pill/fingers to pry their mouth open back by the jaw hinge and shove the pill to the back of their tongue. The butter makes it slippery so they can’t spit it out. You do have to have a good grip on the pill before you butter it, or it will be too slippery to hold.

You put in a bit if cheese (make sure the pill is hidden) and they will gobble it right up!

A Mat, I can definitely grind the pill for one cat who eats like a pig. The other three either take a couple of bites of wet food and walk away, or maybe eat half of a small can so I risk having to go get another pill.

Ct B, I'd probably risk losing a pill with greenies.

Oly, I'm definitely going to do butter with the other three. I knew butter was an option but didn't know why. All these years my cats would get a dry pill and I would stand there and wait until they swallowed it.

Two are short hair and they're the hardest to get by the scruff which was how I always did it, and it's been a long time since any of the cats have had a pill.

I don't suppose anyone's wondered why all four cats have to have a pill today? I'll give you one clue. Both dogs also get one. 😫

We (well…DH) use a pill popper which looks like a syringe. DH keeps cat betweens his legs, holds up head, pops in the pill, and keeps mouth closed until they swallow. Following it up immediately with something tasty might help prevent spit outs. He is much better at it and it is less traumatic for the cat. Some medications we have used have been compounded into liquid form, which is easier, but can get messy.

Done! BTW, three of the cats were about six months old & dumped on us one at a time over the past 15 years. Two were in heat & one was in already pregnant which the Vet found out while spaying her. The other jumped out of a UPS truck on Valentine's Day, 2014. Must have been a barn kitty, younger than six months and my BFF. The winners are:

1) Pepper the Tabby!! She's the youngest. This is kind of cute. After I gave the first cat a pill I brought the box UPS left & set it on the peninsula counter top, which also serves as my vet table. Before I opened it I went to another room for a few seconds, and that's when I saw Pepper laying on the counter next to the box. Pepper always knows that usually there's a tub of fresh Temptations in those brown boxes. Quickly I buttered up her pill, pulled by the scruff and she opened her mouth without a fight. She was shocked though. Afterwards she got some fresh Temptations. :)

2.) Raven the Runaway Tuxedo, the Valentines delivery, my BFF. Tuxedos are my favorite. She took a buttered pill like the Tuxedo she is. Perfect. She came in 2nd because I had to walk to another room.

3) Fifteen year old Lizzie, the fighter boxing champion. I got a good grip & pulled her up & got it in her mouth. The whole time her to front legs were trying desperately to claw me.

4) My sweet little mama's girl with a fat belly. Timid Callie, the Calico. She was the one who had babies. She tried screaming the whole time but I got the pill in & followed her around the LR making sure she swallowed it, went back to the table to clean up and the pill had already fallen off the table onto the floor. I crushed it with wet food, came back and she took two big licks then walked away. The rest is waiting for her. :)

Never did I think I'd become a cat lady, but they make me happy.

Once you get the pill in their mouth run your fingers under their throat area. That will help them to swallow.

Our kitty hated the Greenies and I had such high hopes. I hadn't heard the butter trick but I can imagine dropping it. A couple weeks ago, we tagged team our sweet kitty. DH held her and tilted her head and pried her jaw and I threw the pill towards the back of her throat. We tried to keep her mouth closed but she spit the pill back out. Second time my aim must have been better.

girlnamedgalez, that's what I was trying to remember when doing Lizzie because it was mentioned in a video I watched. Instead I rubbed her nose and cheeks. It worked though thanks to the butter.

Barncatz, DH used to help me with Lizzie which was about 5 years ago and he's just no good. His job was to hold her down while wrapped in the towel & I'd do the rest. I fired him so he's in charge of the dogs who would never resist any type of pill if they're in food.

I completely agree with David. But I was exhausted from spending the whole morning on cats.
