Completed Kitchen--Finally, after 3 years! (Many Photos)
Comments (73)Hi Michellemarie: Thanks for the tip on the soot issue. We had some trouble getting a specialist to install in that area, so the guy who installed maybe got the logs a little bit off when positioning? When we first installed, the flames did not show up as well as the showroom model did. I asked about the log placement then, and he told me there was only one way to install the logs. After some use, I began noticing the soot--but the flame, for some reason, looks much better. (Maybe DH got in there and moved the logs....I'll have to ask him about that.) I will be going into the showroom where we bought the unit, as the switch which controls the blower has not been working, and I have to pick up a new one of those, so I will see what I can learn then about the log placement. Guess I can show them that picture. The "local" vendor (which is on the mainland) told me they use a generalist from another island to service those units, so I was not sure he would be any more knowledgeable than my install guy was. I'm so glad you mentioned the soot though, because I did not know anything about the log placement, only that the flame seemed not right to begin with, and then the soot appeared. Now I know there is an issue for sure...so at least I can have some confidence when I talk to the folks who sold me the unit. Despite these installation/adjustment issues, we really love that fireplace though! (Makes me want one in every room each time I walk past it). Thanks so much for the help!...See MoreTime to complete project and contractors
Comments (32)Here you go Sophie, I took a stab at making a more readable diagram. I had to extrapolate some dimensions as they just are not on that diagram. And I probably guessed wrong. Perhaps Alex can correct. If you can't read this, I'll send it to you directly. I also did a quick throw some things at the wall and see what would stick. I know this is not that practical, but it is extremely visual and modern. BIG Round island. Rounded archway, with that whole section of wall eliminated, but NOT the wine area wall. That frames the range with a circular opening that echoes the circular island. MW between wine and beverage column, easily adjacent to the nook and the living area. WIth the coffee in the upper between them. The beverage column can double as the snack fridge and water fridge so that those interlopers stay out of your prep area. Fridge and freezer columns flank sink on sink wall. I put a bulkhead in the corner rather than corner cabinets. Totally rough, and I think 2 oblong islands might actually work better in the space, but it's too late tonight to block that out....See MoreProject Linus #8 complete
Comments (69)Saypoint, that will be very pretty! As for the price of yarn now, I do watch sales for big projects like afghans. I will say, though, that if it's for a sweater or socks for me or DH, I don't use acrylic yarn, and use a wool or wool blend, which is a LOT more expensive, though I do try to find the least expensive that will still look nice and drape properly for the project. I do quite often pay $20 for sock yarn. BUT I have been wearing the very first pair of sock I made 17 years. So looking at it that way, that pair of socks has cost me pennies per wearing. I do have to repair the bottom of the heels on those and a couple of other pair after catching the bottom on a screw in threshold plates. So, I guess my point is, I don't just look at initial cost, but cost per use, also. Our local knitting circle has participated in Warm Hands, Warm Hearts, a program that was started about 18 years ago by our local hospital's chaplin's wife, who is a long time member of our circle. She is a retired teacher, and had a child who had no hat, so she went home and knitted a hat for that child. It snow balled from there into many knitting/crochet groups making hats and mittens to donate to our local hospitals emergency rooms for the nurses to provide hats and mittens to those who come in with out hats and mittens in the winter. We all look for yarn at yard sales, and often will have it donated to us from various sources. I've even been knitting in the laundramat and been asked if I could use free yarn! The employee had been cleaning out her aunt's home after the aunt's passing, and hadn't been able to bring herself to put it in the garbage. She lived right down the street and immediately called her DH to bring me THREE big garbage bags of clean free yarn! Of course I took it to our next meeting and shared! We also make blankets for local children in distress at a special short term home that takes in children who may be from a single parent home, when that parent can't care for them for whatever reason. Our hospital just put on a thank you dinner for us, and told us we have contributed over 32,000 hand made items in 18 years!...See MoreProject Linus #10 complete
Comments (23)I'm half done with my 6th blanket (Project Linus) plus random baby hats for local hospital and scarves for women's abuse shelter. My stash may not go down for awhile - a friend and I visited some AC Moore stores in the waning days of their closing sale and came away with many bags of yarn for minimal prices....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
