Comments (106)Sorry for the dark exposures, but it is going to pour here, so thought I'd snap some as it is getting dark, in case the blooms do not survive our upcoming storm: 'Miss America' peony - one of my favorite herbaceous peonies: Oldie, but goodie: 'Festiva Maxima' peony. I paired it with catmint & like the combo: Closeup: Belle of Woking clematis: Celebrity peony (1st year)- the shape changes considerably from the first time the bud opens to days later, when it looks more like a pom-pom: Wow- the Festiva Maxima peony survived the storm that took down a 4" tree branch! Here is a better picture:...See MoreYour MAY 2022 highlights
Comments (64)"What is the tree that ‘Sum & Substance is planted under? Could it be a Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’? Such unusual heart shaped leaves. And those hostas really are huge. You have such a nice large property. Looks like a LOT to take care of, I don’t know how you gardeners with large properties do it!" Yes, a Forest Pansy. I "do it" (this year anyway) by taking my photos from afar so you can't see the weeding I'm behind on. It's all I really do from April through October, am retired now. My May standouts this year have been all foliage related. I put in several Spirea 'Candlelight' on the back side of my perennial bed that you don't always see. Well the new growth was astoundingly gorgeous butter yellow that contrasted so nicely with the creeping phlox blooming around it. The 'Little Honey' oakleaf hydrangea is bright yellow, the new growth on the conifers is SO gorgeous, the new Acer leaves, my variegated Kousa dogwoods, the gold Hakone, the 'Sun King' aralia. Even the very plain green growth on everything is so new and lush and verdant- it all just screams fresh new start in May. I love my blooms, I do- my group of 'Blueberry Bliss' Irises is a showstopper in May. But the leaves, the foliage- it's all so perfect this time of year that I really try to appreciate it before the bugs and summer heat tire it all out. I'm getting up there and trying to take in every moment I have outdoors and staring at foliage has to be one of the favorite things I do. We have undeveloped property beyond the fencing and we sit back there just taking it in- I can lose hours staring at the woods. I think the Japanese even call it forest bathing, so it's not wasted time to me, it's why I enjoy living so much....See MoreCruel World Music Fest at Rose Bowl May 11, 2024
Comments (15)We did buy VIP tickets, and they are on an app in Kevin's phone, which is what you have to use to get in. My ticket is on his phone, but I guess that is okay, since I will get a bracelet or something to confirm my VIP pass. I will wear my hat and sunscreen and take extra sunscreen. Backpacks are allowed, but food, drink, and water are not. However, we can take empty water bottles. Also, as I said, prescription medicine is supposed to be carried with the prescription bottles, but I think I can smuggle it in without having to bring the bottles. I will have to think about that. I'll have to decide whether I want to take my SLR camera or just take photos with my phone. I probably will take it, even though it is a bit bulky. I believe when I saw what I thought was Tones On Tail, they had already morphed into Love and Rockets, as I saw them in 1986 or 87. I'm not sure why they have gone back to Tones On Tail. We still have not worked out how we will get there. I would like to use the Metro, but I have to confirm schedules to make sure it runs late enough. I used to take BART from San Francisco to Berkeley to see a few concerts there, but BART has more trains and a better schedule than the L.A. Metro, I think....See MoreWhat are you reading? Comments (10)I took a nearly 15 year hiatus from serious books after my mother died (too young for her and me), and spent the time in my favorite escapist genre, fantasy. Read and reread a lot of great books, and they served their purpose. Before she died I was actually really into reading non-fiction, and started picking that up again recently. Now I'm reading Washington by Ron Chernow. English was my fun major in college so I love talking books!...See MoreMarkay MD-Zone 7A (8A on new map)
