Veggie Tales - May 2022
Comments (97)Been warm and sunny. Supposed to be getting some more rain in tonight- don't have to water the garden :) Got some more yard debris picked up- and dropped along the yardline between me and the neighbors that like to wander my backyard on occasion. Got a lot of cleanup behind the barn to drop out that way too. At least golf carts of giggling twits can't drive through my backyard proper very easily now. A round of adventure mowing done- spotted an american woodcock bobbing along when I went out back by the horse grotto to trim out some branches overhanging the trail too much. Funny little bird, first time I've spotted one they usually hide so well. Yesterday got a purple, a white, and a red grape, two red raspberries, two gold raspberries, a red currant, a black currant, and the big ole bucket of hops all planted out in the gardenyard, My love offered to come out to help me dig and mulch in the sun- he is feeling it today, lol. Gave the veggie beds a bit of a drink feed yesterday... and weeded out the garlic bed- a whole 10 minutes and clean! Still need to harvest the narrow leaf plantain out of the pepper bed....See MoreMay 1st ,2022 , week one
Comments (67)Anne, I was hoping you were in our neighborhood. . .we need more OKGW gardeners here. I'm 30 miles SE of Tulsa, 30 miles west of Tahlequah, 7-8 miles NE of Wagoner (Whitehorn Cove next to Ft Gibson Lake). Do you have garden areas planned out or are you starting from scratch? Well, you're well ahead of the game with those lovely wood chips! Kim, I'm thinking I WANT to plant stuff. Then I keep remembering my objective this year. Dealing with grasshoppers, pulling Bermuda, and pulling those blasted tree saplings that are having a banner year. I've not seen this horrible circumstance previous to this year. Every year, it seems, there is SOME crazy banner year for some insect/rodent/tree/ etc. And so I am planting very few vegetables. . . I do have a lot of native shrubs to find places for once I get the blasted tree saplings out. I lost so much muscle tone over the past 2.5 years because of the hip pain. So I'm good now, after the hip replacement. . . but just terribly out of shape. I HATE this. And yet, with gardening season kicking in, already am doing better. Just keep moving! The yard is turning its every year emerald green. . . I am so glad my favorite color is green. Though I hate Bermuda, it certainly does turn the lawn that beautiful green--and the back drop is green green trees. Successes out in the yard: lemon balm (which I'm tearing out); tree saplings (which I'm tearing out); Bermuda (which I'm tearing out); carrots and beets (which I'm thinning out). I'm also tearing out, well not tearing out, but trying to obliterate. . . the south American mirabilis (4 o'clocks). I put a blue tarp on top of this obnoxious spreading bed. I need for those flowers to be GONE. I'll be so happy to put in my 2 New Jersey shrubs . . so for now, the shrubs are in a holding bed in one of the minderal tubs. Haha, Larry, glad you made it back from the mouth of the Mississippi. And ready to zzzzzzzzzzz . XOXO...See MoreSecond week of May, 2022
Comments (56)Oh no, Kim! That is too bad! What is the deal with potting mixes this year?! Honestly, many of my plants were "off". Y'all saw them at the SF, but they were at least growing. And they're doing great now that they're in the garden. I hope the ones that Andria took for the community garden are doing great too. Our PEPH are popping up. Saw it this morning. I can't remember exactly the day Rick planted them, but it wasn't very long ago at all. They should pop up quickly for you, Kim. They are aphid magnets here, but we still manage to get a harvest. At some point I hope to have enough ladybugs and friends around to take care of the aphids. I do have lots and lots of ladybugs, but apparently not enough. Saw them on the broccoli last night, sprayed them off and squished them. Didn't see any more this morning. The broccoli is almost done. The little heads are getting bigger. Hi Josh. My name is really Jennifer (I wish it was Hazel) and some here call me HJ. Larry, I so wish we had got a little rain. Looks like we have a couple of chances at the end of the 9 day. lol @ Rick's snapchat pic. Where is everyone? Gardening? I got out early to do some watering in the hoop house and Charlotte's Garden. Also, worked on the area behind the shop. Got a bit more crabgrass and weeds dug out, cardboard put down and woodchips. A handy panel put up with Tom's help. It will trellis the 3 overflow Heidi tomatoes in that area. A cage on another tomato. As I was working in that area (behind the shop), one of the roosters alerted, so I glanced behind me and a skunk ran along the chicken yard fence past me. I froze, not knowing what to do. The shop was opened at both ends. I was so scared it went in there. I walked around the opposite end of the shop and thought I saw its bushy tail, went to tell Tom. He came out a few minutes later and looked around in the shop, but it wasn't in there. Thank goodness. It was moving pretty quickly as it ran past me. Other than that, planted a couple of flowers in the pots on the front porch. Tom is working on the water softener. And just did little things around here. I haven't had a day off since last Saturday so things were piling up. Hope everyone is enjoying their day....See MoreMay 2022 in my hosta garden
Comments (40)Debra, thank you for the thoughtful comments. Your sun perennials should do well and provide a fun change in focus. I have always been hesitant to do the ammonia drench because I have burned plants with Miracle gro hose sprayer in the past. Dilution is important, but so it the sunlight level, humidity, and heat, IMHO. Generally, my good intentions do more harm than good. I picked and squished slugs today. The voles are continuing their onslaught on the hostas and liriope, breaching the liriope border completely in multiple areas important for water-flow control. I must regroup with DH and plan our counter-attack. Today, Stained Glass fell over and is in rehab due to voles. Last week, Ani Machi fell and may not recover. I cleared some excess leaves and mulch today so the voles have less cover. On the bright side, lots of plants are doing great. There are so many flower buds everywhere, hosta, lily, and more. Grapes and kiwiberries are growing well. I even started some tomato seeds after a 5 year hiatus....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
