Body Bag Roses at Lowe's
Comments (16)I buy body bag roses every year and have not had a problem getting them to grow and I have not had a problem getting the wrong rose. One thing I always do is plant them in a pot first, in GOOD potting soil. That way I can see how it does and if I even like it. I have NEVER had one die. This year I broke tradition and put a Pope John Paul II directly in the ground, it was in one of those biodegradable containers, I did cut away the container, I knew that I wanted this rose to be in that spot but it is not doing well. It is still green so I know its not dead but it has absolutely no growth at all yet while EVERYTHING else is growing. I have learned my lesson and I will never put a bare root directly in the ground again....See MoreBody bag roses from Big Lots
Comments (16)I bought about 10 body bags from both Lowes and Home Depot in February almost right off the truck. Every one is flourishing. I also saw the remnants of these body bags still lingering around and being sold in same stores in April. They were clearly dead on a sale rack for a few dollars when they should have been canned. I think the key is to really understand what you are looking at. I finally did see a "Big Lots" store out here, and indeed they did have some nice dead body bags. I think seeing rose bags on an end cap next to the laundry detergent aisle is a good clue to run the other way. The more experienced you are (or the better timing for fresh off the truck), the better odds you'll have. If you buy dead, you'll have dead....See MoreGood or Bad? Walmart Mini Roses
Comments (14)I just bought 3 of these roses today at Walmart - the blooms are bright yellow and very large for a mini rose so they might be a mini-flora. The plants are healthy but there are 3-4 "cuttings" in each pot. I want to be careful about the kind of soil I repot them in. I have some bark fine/mushroom compost/sand soil that I use on my sturdier flower beds but I feel this is too coarse for these tiny rooted babies. I am thinking of a soilless mix that is quite fine - which is what they are in. Maybe even a seed starting mix? I have a friend who put a grocery store mini in Sta-Green soil with fertilizer in it - this mini is now huge - super healthy and just beautiful. He pots all his roses in this and they are gorgeous. It is a nice looking blend, not too coarse. Wondering if I should repot in a seed starting mix, like it looks like they are in now, then let them grow and get stronger then put them in this Sta Green mix. Would appreciate any input! Thanks - Judith...See MoreBody bag roses—do you purchase them?
Comments (17)It's an Idaho things, too, only worse. I've never bought a body bag rose. Years ago, I did find Julia Child in pots at a big box store (2006--the year she appeared--amazing), and that wasn't exactly a body bag. So I bought two Julias, one of which turned out to be Wild Blue Yonder (new that year, too). I spent the next month trying to find another Julia to go with the first one. I did find one in the next county at a nursery. And today, 16 years later, they both look and bloom the same. Wild Blue Yonder became my Clown Prince. I love all three of these roses.
