Body bag roses from Big Lots

I purchased roses from the big lots store too. I am new to roses and thought I was doing good by buying ones that had broke dormancy...I read here and find that that is not the case. The green shoots looked good for the first week or so then died off and now the canes are bare. Have these died? Should I uproot the to see if the roots are still viable? The cane on one is still green underneath the out covering of the stalk but on looks like it doesnt have much green tint left.

Please advise...I have never grown roses and feel like a failure!!! Mine were transplanted per the instructions on the bag in 20 gal pots. Where have I gone wrong. In Austin so the weather shouldn't have been a factor....
