Lilies in Pea Gravel
Comments (8)Hi Over the years have tried almost everything but find fracted clay generally better . Oil DRi as opposed to unscented kitty litter seems to hold up better. Use fruit tree spikes as fert pushed into the clay whenever flowers begin to decline. A layer of crushed lava keeps the fish from digging though i usually kept tropical fish so didn't have much of a digging problem until I switched to GF. gary...See MorePea gravel, construction sand, or lava rocks?
Comments (15)1)top (12:00) pourus pumice 2)right side (3:00) sifted for size scorsa 3)bottom (6:00) dry stall **avalable at farm feed and supply stores 4)left side (9:00) poultry grit ** avalable ay arm feed and suply stores 5) Center composted gravel * Also sifted for size having different shapes and sizes of granite in it including courser sifted SAND. Aqaruim gravel in this pic would be okay to use primarlay as a top dressing and maybe a piece or two ( small amount) in a grity mix soil but it's just to polished or not pourus enough to be relaiable. Personaly I wouldn't use the AKA river polished materails as an ingrediant in part of a gritty mix. There proberly is a Ph balance use or a potted plant application ( Proberly a few 1000 if I had to guess.) for it but I hadn't used what the google pic shows in anything here. Keep it simple. Even in 100 % pourus sifted sand a lithop is at a five star Ritz Carlton when potted here. While out grit shoping think sizeable by sifting materails that are both pourus and sharp. Comments (2)Pea gravel has rounded sides and does not compact well, if at all. For that reason, it is seldom recommended as surface that will be walked on frequently as it will continue to slip and the rocks slide around each other. If you want a surface that can properly compacted you need crushed rock or gravel - something with jagged surfaces that will mesh together. Also wood chips make a perfectly acceptable surface for both walking on, keeping the mud to a minimum and stacking the firewood and will not compromise drainage....See MorePea Gravel Patio
Comments (3)We did gravel paths and a gravel/flagstone patio about 5 years ago. Checked with hubby. No sand. Process was dig out, landscape fabric, layer of 3/4” gravel topped with the finer quarter minus. It has held up really well and our flagstones haven’t moved or sunk. You could also do gravel only patio if you pack well. Furniture won’t sink. It may need topping up in a few years. Our paths are ready for touch up and fresh quarter minus but are still well packed. I love them. I think there are photos on gardenweb somewhere. I’ll look through my old posts. We are also on clay soil and had a pretty wet yard....See Moretsugajunkie z5 SE WI ♱
