Fragrant shrub that looks like oakleaf hydrangea
Comments (5)There are fragrant viburnums (eg., burkwoodii, etc) but their flowers aren't really in the form of an upright panicle like an oakleaf hydrangea, ie., they are more rounded. I mentioned the clethra, which does bloom later in summer and has upright panicle blooms that look almost like the oakleaf hydrangea, but the clethra's panicles are smaller in size. Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' has white panicles and they definitely are fragrant. Oakleafs are supposed to be hardy in our area but mine are still very susceptible to the late freezes. The foliage is still beautiful and I never count on having blooms. When it does, I consider it a surprise bonus....See MoreWhat is this, it looks a little like Hydrangea
Comments (7)I grew C. trichotomum in my old garden and would routinely pull out errant root suckers :-)) In fact, my original plant started as a sucker from someone else's garden! But it was so gorgeous and fragrant when in bloom I put up with its aggressive behavior....See MoreDorian W
